You can't read the label from inside the can

My wife and I often discuss how to improve ourselves and challenge our perspectives. Moving to the US has accentuated this. It’s exciting and new with many highlights but there is plenty of tricky stuff as well.

A quote we came across recently really helped see things differently.

‘You can’t read the label from inside the can’

I took this to create some distance from myself in any situation so I can ‘see’ it. The field of vertical leadership development frames this as moving yourself from 'subject' to 'object'. We are ‘subject’ to many invisible things happening to us (inside the can). Moving to ‘object’ means seeing those things as objects that are visible and observable (outside the can) and therefore give us a choice regarding our actions and reactions.
