How frustrating was the run up to the new rules? I feel like I’ve spent months doing nothing but talk about IR35 (in fact, it’s been two years).

The joys of homeschooling and remote work mean even my 9-year-old knows what the right to substitution is (she tried to use it when being asked to tidy her room, proud Dad moment).

Nonetheless the race to the finish line is over. The only thing is - it wasn’t the finish line, it was just a warm up lap.

Those who did a blanket ban on PSCs are beginning to understand why Fixed Term Contracts all but vanished in the early 2000s. Many have had to accept rate increases of 30% when using Umbrella resource.

Look at any forum and there is a general concensus within the contractor community that the majority only took an FTC or accepted an extension that was Inside IR35 until something better (Outside) comes along.

Last week a client told me how concerned she was that although her employer assured her that they had a plan for IR35, their continued inability to secure flexible resource since a blanket ban in mid 2020 has led to their entire change portfolio now running 6 months behind schedule and she can't triage it.

I think I speak for everyone when I say we’re all fatigued by IR35. That’s why, to bring some well needed humour and a bit of lightheartedness to an otherwise dull topic we gave our creative folks license to do “the most unlikely thing we’d see from Rullion about IR35”
