You Can’t Get Found, If You Don’t First Get Lost

You Can’t Get Found, If You Don’t First Get Lost

A few weeks ago I wrote about my experience through my 8 month depression.

Today in The Re-Education of Passion, I’m going to expand on that as an avenue to understanding the darker parts of our very human natures to put some light on the lighter parts.

I want to lead this off by first saying that when words are used frequently in society the meaning can get lost.

So to tackle this conversation let’s start with the more objective definition of Depression:

According to the Canadian Mental Health Association:

Depression is categorized as a Mental Illness that affects your mood, the way you understand yourself, and the way you understand and relate to things around you.

It’s more than sadness or a low mood. There are highly complex feelings associated with it. It can come up for no apparent reason, or with a reason, and last longer than 2 weeks at a time.

Complex Feelings Associated with Depression Can Look Like:

  • Worthlessness/hopelessness; Unreasonable guilt or shame; Anger/irritability; Confusion/indecision; Loss of interest in things you once enjoyed; Self-isolation; Suicidal ideation

It’s real, it’s painful and for some, medication is the best route.

Depression takes lives and for that reason, it’s not something I would ever play around with.

It’s important that if you have any of those feelings that you speak with an expert as soon as possible. I have linked resources at the bottom of this newsletter if you need them, or if you know someone who does.

That being said, I chose a different modality to move through my own feelings that did not involve medication. It turned out to be effective and got me to my goal.

Now let’s tackle the subjective definition of Depression:

The one thing that I believe without a doubt is important for every single person to understand, is that although Depression comes with a ‘definition’, how it is expressed is a highly individual experience.

No two people will feel it the same way.

How Depression Showed Up For Me:

How depression showed up for me was in some ways similar to the definition, and some ways not.

I definitely self-isolated, had complex feelings, and an indescribable oppression that walked around with me for pretty much close to an entire year.

Most days I would wake up wondering if this was going to be my new normal. Not knowing when it would end, or if would get worse added to an already challenging experience.

I slept a lot, and in the beginning had a ton of guilt around my lack of energy. I beat myself up almost every day trying to figure out 'why now' and 'what did I do' to make this happen.

Many People Have Asked, What 'Cured' Me?

I am very hesitant to state my own 'cure', because it's not going to be same for everyone and 'cures' gives us a flawed idea of what depression is. And it also disrespects the process and the emotion.

Every feeling that we have - I'm talking good, bad, ugly - the whole experience is a very important part of the human experience.

So what I can do instead is tell you what Depression taught me. Because the lessons were worth more to me than the cure.

Depression taught me acceptance, compassion and how to build a really good relationship with my bad feelings, and the bad feelings of others. It taught me emotional flexibility and how to sit with my own pain. It taught me that sometimes you have to manufacture your own light - no one can 'save' you but you. It taught me that pain stores information, and when we are able to identify the information in the pain, the pain releases the tension felt in the body. It taught me that my body has a language. A highly sophisticated one. And to understand the language of the body is the most important teaching there is. It taught me that all my experiences and my feelings are valid. It taught me that if I wanted or desired to help another person, I first needed to help myself. It taught me that God exists. It taught me that the way I show up is okay. It taught me tolerance for what is aligned to me and where I'm going, and it taught me intolerance for what is not aligned. It taught me that my past gave me gifts and bullets and I'm here to respect both.

The mind, body relationship is an orchestra. Each instrument is required to work in harmony with all others in order for a symphony to happen.

The challenge is this. Because we as a society don’t know enough about how we work, and we don’t all have access to the work that can help us work, we have orchestra's within playing in a non-synchronized way. This causes some really loud and awful music going on, on the inside.

Doing the work gets our inner world learning how to play in harmony. And when we play in harmony, everything works. Your inside system tunes into an outside system that also then harmonizes to each other.

So if you’re not playing great music on in the inside, it will never be able to harmonize to the outside. And that's where many of us get into trouble.

This was a process, and it came alongside exceptional council.

What I learned was that depression came as my messenger. A message that showed me once again that I was not in alignment. That I was taking on far too many things and denying myself a chance to operate optimally.

Guys and gals, I teach this stuff. So when my life shows me areas that aren't functioning in alignment to how I teach - of course my body has things to say about it!

And this is also why working in your expertise is so bloody hard! Because at the end of the day, it's not about how much you know. It's about how you are applying what you know - to your own life. That's where the magic happens.

Using these lessons gave me a whole new perspective that has re-aligned me to a greater purpose that my passion has been pushing me towards this entire time!

Getting UnBlocked

Insights come from the dark parts of our experience, but we need support to get there. I could never have done this on my own. And I work in this world. So that is saying a lot.

If you are not currently experiencing depression, however you know there are layers within you that you want to better understand, I have created a way for you to now do that.

UnBlocked takes my decades of learning through various modalities to get a foundation of your self that is easy to understand for the masses, yet personalized to the individual. It helps people look at the specific areas I learned to look at in order to work through the first few layers of self, in a safe and controlled environment.

I've also went further and brought on a Social Worker into the team to address any matters that are beyond my expertise and license.

A recent graduate of the program shared:

“I would definitely recommend the Unblocked session for anyone who is looking for more self awareness and wondering why they may be feeling "stuck" in their day to day life. This course really went inward to help identify, address and remove blocks that I did not even know existed. The level of detail that Kira and her team went into went beyond my expectations and the weekly group sessions and one on ones were amazing and sparked some very thoughtful conversations.”

I have created these programs because I believe we live in a society that knows more about our things than we do about ourselves. And that’s the real missed opportunity of most of our generations.

If you're ready to take a leap and move through a fascinating process of self discovery, our next class begins July 11th. You might want learn a bit more about that. If that is the case, read below for information on how.

When you realise what the emotional torment your going through actually is, what it’s clinically called for me was an initial denial ‘what me, I’m happy smiling positive person, always willing to help. Having a mini meltdown in front of my bosses gave me no hiding place so I was exposed. Probably for the best too! I had experienced a lot of changes at work and one personal to me found me in a role not of my choice but a role 90% of I could do with my eyes closed. I felt un seen and even worse un heard. Frustrated, disappointed and angry! I have 30yrs experience in my industry, recognise, that I know more about products and processes by customers and colleagues. Then to top it all the job I had wanted for years, I was past over for. I was openly told, clearly you know more, have done the role previously, have experience but they didn’t see any passion. The last few weeks I have had to swallow my pride, dig deep and pick myself up, exhausting. So to stumble upon your posts has been enlightening and encouraging. I want to learn from my experience and feel companies could also benefit from this, getting the best out of your workforce where skilled knowledgeable people are scarce must be valuable?

"when we are able to identify the information in the pain, the pain releases the tension felt in the body." This really stood out to me in the article. There is so much trauma and micro trauma that came with late identified Autistic ADHD Dyslexic life for me. Until I released a good majority of that pain and was able to identify it, my body was so tight and sick from it. This was a fabulous article and I just came back to revisit it again today. Miranda Lyons I'd love for you to meet Kira Day and join us for Passion Break with Tracy Borreson on Wednesday night. This is the COMPASS I was telling you about Friday.
