IF YOU CAN'T EXPLAIN IT SIMPLY
Have you ever read the values of a company on the business's website? So many times you see these long-winded statements describing each of their core values. On top of that, it doesn't really tell you what it means, it just tells you what it looks like or who for...
Let's not add in the stuff we talked about last week like the obvious price of entry stuff (Service Honesty, Integrity, Trust).
The values on many business sites represent an outwardly facing "brand narrative" that the business thinks the consumer wants to hear. And they use so many words to describe each value. It ends up becoming a #WordSalad.
Firstly, please remember that your core values should be the unique thinking of your business. the 4 - 6 things that make your business unique in how you think about the problem you are passionate about solving (#Purpose).
Nobody will end up reading this tossing of words, nor will your team be able to use them to make smarter decisions.
You should be able to articulate all your values and what they mean in 36 or less words...in total...not for each one!
Write out the unique thought like this:
Insight - Anticipate and act in advance
Simplicity - Freedom from complexity
Each value should be defined in a sentence or statement of 5 words or less. They don't need to say who for, as they should apply to all stakeholders in the business!
If you want some help with your values, talk to us about how to set them up right.

DIGGING FOR GOLD?
Not what.?
Not who.?
Not why.?
HOW.?
"HOW do we uniquely think about THAT?”?
It's usually around about the tenth time that we ask that question that people start to get frustrated.?
Sometimes there's even tears (usually from us).?
And it's at this time that we know we're on to something.?
You see, when it comes to clearly and simply defining how you think about something, in the unique and eclectic way that you do, digging deep into the 'heart brain’ - where we're tying to put words into feelings - can be pretty tough.?
Like sure, this is where all the feel good gold is once we get there.?
But to get there – just like anywhere that's worth going – sometimes takes a bit of digging, shifting and sifting through S.H.I.T:?
The default answers around:?
Service?
Honesty?
Integrity?
Trust...?
… amongst others things.?

As humans, we're more 'negatively biased' toward moving away from pain rather than toward pleasure.? So that's when it's important to have someone HELP YOU through this process.? Because if we know (and we do) that a process is going to be painful (while we dig through all the painful and frustrating emotions on the way from misery to happiness today), we won't want to do it.?
And usually we don't.?
Well not effectively, anyway.?
And wouldn't understanding how you uniquely think about your business so your people can lead, live and love it, as a foundation for every action and decision inside your business worth doing and knowing, be a matter of priority?

One of the greatest and most valuable tools I've ever learned was the art of SIMPLICITY.
Which, at Circle Leadership, simply means:
"Freedom from complexity.”
And the importance of that couldn't be more key when it comes to defining your values.
As in:
Your unique thinking, about
What's most important, and
How to clearly articulate that.
