You can't buy a good reputation; you must earn it!

“That would NEVER happen to me!” you think as you read about a student whose college acceptance was withdrawn because of a tweet they shared.
“I wouldn’t share something that would cost me my job!” you mutter when you hear about the job seeker who lost out on a job because of a Facebook post.
These days, your online presence has more of an impact than ever before. The way you interact with others online is accessible for anyone to see, and it can and will impact your life. Here are some do’s and don’ts to build a positive online reputation.
DO remember that everything you post online is fair game. Sure, your LinkedIn is completely professional, but what about your Facebook and Twitter? What about that photo your friend tagged you in? Is every single one of these a good reflection of your character??
DON’T assume anonymity is safe. Almost anything is traceable these days, and big companies are likely to perform their due diligence.?
DO remember that comments count. Comments are an incredible tool for building your network and connecting with others. In addition, they are also connected to your name and a reflection of who you are.?

DON’T avoid an online presence. While it’s not worse than a bad online reputation, it’s not much better. Employers want to learn more about you through your social media and website. Don’t hide- instead, showcase your best self.?
DO respond. Reply to comments on your posts or blogs. Let others know what you learned from their post. If you choose to never interact with others online, you’re communicating that the only opinion you care about is your own.
DON’T avoid uncomfortable conversations online. It’s okay to disagree with someone else’s opinion and share your dissent. It’s not okay to call names, use foul language, or insult their intelligence. The goal of the internet isn’t to create an echo chamber of similar ideas. You can, and should, share differing beliefs with grace.?
And finally- a bonus don’t. DON’T be afraid to do a good scrub. If you haven’t, go through the history of every one of your profiles and delete posts, comments, photos, and tags that you don’t want to be associated with your name.
