Dearly beloved,
Ever since I started teaching Zumba, I learned that there are some things just not worth fighting. It's virtually impossible to pack out your classes in the school holidays and it's darn hard in December too. Better to go with the flow and get ready for the back to school rush (especially in January).
It's taught me that, come July and August, it's an uphill battle to get people excited about pretty much anything besides a pool side and a cocktail (virgin or not). (Having said that, those in my Zumba Gold class on Monday morning will know that we're being a lot more consistent than we were in May - mainly due to all those bank holidays!)?
So I was all set to take it a little bit easy this month, aside from recording another audiobook. (Did I tell you that Camino de la Luna - Courage is out now? It's so good it ended up on Apple audiobooks twice!?
But if you do want to buy it, please make sure you buy the first one, because we're not sure the other one is "legal", it might be Amazon "bootlegging" my work!)
Anyway, as I said, I was all set to just not bother too much in August, after all, it's often hot, and me and Grandma have not had enough sunny garden time this year. (Although I am glad of the relief from having to water, compared to last August. At one point last year, I was monitoring the plant moisture levels in FOUR gardens! I got quite annoyed when a FIFTH garden got lumped in.) My plan was just to sit out and drink tea and try to fatten up my grandma with tasty treats. Get out for some nice things with the family after all the exams, chemo, illnesses, tests, scans, migraines n everything.
Unfortunately they've started building a huge housing estate in the fields behind my mum's house (Monday to Friday 8-4 or thereabouts) so I also wanted to get them out, maybe down to my place for a bit of peace and quiet. The diggers are on...
Grandma's house... the next house but one have decided to build an extension. The digger's out. (The owners have, as many do, disappeared on holiday to avoid all the noise and mess.)
Monday morning, I look out on the playing field next to my house to see lots of men in hoodies hunkering down on the kids' climbing frame and outdoor gym looking shifty. More vans arrive. A shipping container is suddenly in the middle of the field. Temporary fencing starts going up. I look away to make a cup of tea and suddenly there's an enormous digger and several earth shifting vehicles. Uh oh. Yes, they're building two new tennis courts, and so the diggers will be at it... Monday to Friday 8-4 or thereabouts for the next four weeks.
I gave up, got my gear together and have spent this week hitting the DIY shops hard, finding out just which of the jobs at my mum's house are within reach and which will need someone with an actual certificate. So far, she's quite happy with my botch jobs. And I didn't even need a digger.
You could say that when the going gets tough, the tough go to B&Q.
(I'll go to them all, but B&Q has loos.)
Lots of love,
