Although several business sectors are suffering now, many others are thriving and booming at the same time. There is hope, even in the crisis. I believe that the greatest opportunities exist in the midst of the greatest chaos but to take advantage and pivot as necessary, you’ve got to apply yourself, think outside the box and create your own luck by solving specific critical problems. It is no longer enough to take advantage of opportunities, we must move to creating opportunities for ourselves.

Digital Media engagement has risen exponentially. According to research, WhatsApp and Facebook have seen a 40% and 37% increase in usage respectively due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Video Conferencing Platforms are in very high demand because most organizations globally including government agencies and religious bodies, have been forced to keep their people engaged using video conferencing platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc. The net worth of Eric Yuan, Zoom’s founder, has increased since the start of the coronavirus crisis. As at publication, he is currently worth $9.11B and ranked in the top 200 (#172) richest in the world, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Here’s the kicker: Yuan wasn’t even on the list before 2020!

The Gaming Industry has experienced a dramatic surge in home entertainment, particularly online video gaming. According to Verizon, video gaming traffic on their internet network increased by approximately 75% since the shutdown in the US alone.

E-Learning and Virtual Coaching is on the rise. The pandemic gave many the opportunity for self-development, especially with some Ivy League institutions providing free virtual courses. Many parents are also enrolling their children in several online academic programs. Many people are using this time to get personal coaching to deal with the stressors of the moment and create their goals and plans post covid-19.

Online Shopping and Logistics companies like Amazon are daily smiling to the bank simply because of the lockdown. Many people can’t go out to shop, so they have to shop online, and have their orders delivered to them at home. Amazon is regularly employing contract staff to meet increased demand. According to a report published by the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS), as of April 15 2020, Jeff Bezos’ fortune had increased by an estimated $25 billion since January 1, 2020. 

Cloud Computing is in very high demand today because many businesses are working remotely and need very secure platforms to save their documents offsite so that their staff can access these documents remotely. Amazon, Akamai Technologies and data-center owners etc. provide cloud computing services and are raking in a lot of money at this time. According to Forbes, approx. 6 in 10 knowledge workers in the US are working remotely as of March 19, and the percentage is likely to increase astronomically as the lockdown persists.

Online Video Streaming and Entertainment Platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Disney etc. are making crazy money right now. With everyone stuck at home and no sports to watch, limited fun and recreational activities etc., most people are seriously bingeing on series and movies on these streaming platforms. Interestingly, Netflix shares have gone up by about 40% in the last few months, selling for approx. $451.43 and dwarfing the stock value of Exxon Mobil $45.34.
