You Can Test, Track and Tweak Communication With Your Team to Improve Recruitment, Retention and Results

One of the Four Marketing Value Drivers is Test, Track and Tweak your stories and your marketing actions.

Most people understand this related to their company’s Brand Storytellling.

But let’s address B2E storytelling and how you can test, track and tweak yours as a leader, manager, influencer or team member.

I want to break it down for you at your personal level.

You communicate with people in your company all day long. It might be via Slack, email, Zoom, texting, phone or in person. How intentional are you about leveraging the power of storytelling to change behaviors and mindsets?

I’ve found most of us aren’t as intentional as we could be which prevents us from maximizing productivity and our potential impact internally and externally.

Let’s say you have to communicate to your team about a project you’re working on. You know you’re going to present an update on a Zoom call with the team. You also know you have a chance to talk, text and email individuals prior to the team call.

What’s your story? And equally important: what’s your storytelling plan?

Take the time to draft the Big Idea you want to convey in your update. Then add some supporting bullet points that also need to be mentioned.

Now you can begin to test, track and tweak to maximize your storytelling opportunity.

Test that story on one person. Take a moment to enter what their responses were both verbally and non-verbally. Doesn’t have to be anything formal. Type something into your Notes app. Tell the same story to another person. Track it. Then talk or text or email the next person.

Review your notes. See the trends of what they all said. See the differences. Now you can tweak the story based on what you learned.

Try it out on another person. See whether the minor tweaks you did made a difference.

This whole process doesn’t take a long time and actually will end up being about the same amount of time you’d have spent without being systematic.

You’ve tested your story. Listened and tracked. Reviewed what you learned. Tweaked accordingly.

The process can continue as much as necessary based on the story, storytelling opportunity and potential value of changing mindsets on this specific issue.

You can do it. You’ll see how it works. Then pass it on to others.
