"You can only go so far without process."

"You can only go so far without process." — Bono

The Coaching

The quote itself isn't a huge insight.

What's interesting is who said it: Bono, one of the most prolific creatives on the planet; an artist to the core; someone we could imagine seeing process as a constraint on his creativity.

If Bono acknowledges the importance of process, so should we.

If you're someone who likes process, be careful not to be a slave to it.

If you're someone who feels constrained by process, be careful not to be a slave to your freedom.

Pick a goal execution process, and stick with it even when you don't feel like it.

After all, structure may limit our freedom in the moment, but it frees us to accomplish what we actually want to achieve.

The Habits

  1. Pause to remember what your big goals are (don't skip this!).
  2. Review your actions from last week (done? not done?).
  3. Decide what actions you'll take this week (specific and measurable).
  4. Schedule the work in your calendar (time blocking).

Now, you're set to win.

even reframing "process" to something else like "rituals" can go a long way. we often default to thinking linearly, but if the actual activity of making progress (via process) is more in line with things we like doing or coordinating new ways of working it can feel less constraining
