By the year 2030 India would be largest importer of crude oil in the world, to meet its energy demands, this is not a matter to be proud of, but it is a matter of great concern. Energy produced by burning oil will produce the following:
1. Carbon dioxide (CO2) which will result in greenhouse gas and this is a major source of global warming.
2. Carbon monoxide (CO), is a poisonous gas that has no smell or taste. Breathing it in can make you unwell, and it can kill if you're exposed to high levels.
3. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) causes acid rain, which is harmful to plants and to animals that live in water, and it worsens or causes respiratory illnesses and heart diseases, particularly in children and the elderly
4. Nitrogen oxides (NOX) and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) contribute to ground-level ozone, which irritates and damages the lungs
5. Particulate matter (PM) results in hazy conditions in cities and scenic areas, and, along with ozone, contributes to asthma and chronic bronchitis, especially in children and the elderly. Very small, or “fine PM” is also thought to cause emphysema and lung cancer
6. Lead can lead to severe health impacts, especially for children, and air toxics are known or probable carcinogens
7. Then there are various air toxics such as benzene, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and 1,3-butadiene may be emitted when some types of petroleum are burned
So more the oil we consume the more we will contribute to the environment destruction. So can we sit back and make the life of our children miserable or can we all contribute to make the country less dependent on oil and more on renewable energy. The alternative energy source is renewable energy. Renewable energy technologies are clean sources of energy that have a much lower environmental impact than conventional energy technologies.
By using renewable energy instead of fossil fuels we would significantly decrease the current levels of greenhouse gas emissions, and this would have positive environmental impact for our entire planet. Renewable energy is not all about environment but it can give a great boost to our economy by creating many number of job opportunities. This sector is capable of generating large amount of job opportunities since most of the renewable energy sources is labor intensive.
Of course one of the important reason why we need to concentrate on renewable energy is it can improve the countries energy security by reducing the dependence on foreign countries for our oil needs and these countries can exploit oil importing countries dire need and dependence on crude.
Fortunately a country like India is blessed with huge natural resources and does have a variety of different options to choose for its energy production, we are blessed with right amount of sun light, we have enough potential to generate energy using the wind, if planned properly each city and towns and even villages can generate energy using biomass, then there is scope for geothermal energy, water resources, etc., depending on which part of the country it is.
By producing energy using renewable energy we can reach out to many rural villages and help them to come to the main stream of development so that we can eradicate poverty from our country all together. What we need is the sincere desire in each of us to contribute in whatever way to achieve this. Make a plan for yourself as to how you will contribute to this, you can come out with innovative ideas on how you can contribute, may be starting a bio gas plant in your village, or setting up solar panels on top of your roof or even if there is potential for wind, then establish a mini wind turbine, the more we all come out and contribute the prices will also come down and so is companies would come out with more innovative products that is within the reach of every citizen.
Come out from the shell and take a pledge to make the country less and less dependent on crude and more and more on renewable energy. Let us not wait for the government to do all for us, let us do what we can and then the government would have no option but to make this sector a priority sector. You can choose to be a passive consumer or choose to be an active contributor, the choice is yours..
You can make the difference so why wait and watch.

8 年Great article. A supporting forum with members who are in this field, and can throw some light on how to implement this in our homes, would be of great help. Such valuable input gets lost because we tend to forget this when we get caught up in our daily grind. This needs to become a movement with dedicated support. In Chennai, we saw youngsters coming together and fighting peacefully for Jallikattu, as it was a part of the culture. Hope we would have the same dedication in saving the only world we have to live in and it's valuable resources.
