Dean & Professor at Faculty of Management, Istanbul Technical University
On February 6, southeastern Türkiye was hit by two massive earthquakes (7.7 and 7.6 in magnitude) within 9 hours, directly impacting 15 million people in 10 major cities. I am lost in tears, like it has happened many times during the past 5 days in my temporary isolation in Chicago, as I am witnessing the rescuing of a 2-month old infant at the 128th hour after the first hit.
My family and immediate connections are safe, but southeast Türkiye and northwest Syria are not. The size of the impacted area is too big, unheard of before, almost as big as the entire England. More than 20 thousand people lost their lives in Türkiye as of this writing, and the death toll keeps rising by the hour.
I am thankful to so many who have reached out expressing their support, particularly to my students with big hearts at #chicagobooth. Rescue operations continue in difficult winter conditions, and there is a long path to recovery. The entire country with additional support from friends around the globe poured in to help in all forms.
