You CAN Have Challenges AND Experience Deep Peace and Happiness

What do you usually do when you feel frustrated with work, or feel unhappy, uncertain, insecure financially, a lack of meaning and purpose or undervalued??

Do you try to do something so that you’ll feel better??

Maybe you tell yourself what the underlying circumstances are that explain those feelings??

One might be that a supplier isn’t fulfilling an order you need in order to honor your obligations to your customers.?

You seek to have a supplier fill that order. (Do something to feel better.)

Of course, you want to honor your obligations, but why??

You want to have a good reputation. You want to keep the client, so you have the income and stability.

You want these feelings of annoyance, anxiety, fear of losing a client to go away.

Does any of those feelings help you get the order to come through? What do they do to you? Your other clients? Your coworkers? How do they influence your behavior with them and with your family??

Why do you want the feelings to go away?

You want to feel calm, secure, peaceful, knowing all is well – something along those lines, don’t you??

Of course, you want all of that. it is our natural human condition to want those feelings; they are inherent in our being, whether we realize it or not.?

How would you like to experience those feelings whether or not a circumstance is meeting your expectations?

What difference would that make for you? Your team? The others in your organization? Customers? Clients?

You can experience that now. And paradoxically that might open new possibilities. You will be the resilience most everyone is seeking in the workplace.?

Often, we experience those “better feelings” temporarily. Until another challenging circumstance appears. We begin the process all over again.?

Isn’t that how life is (we think)? Fleeting moments – or hours or days – of happiness, or security, or peace. Then we have to go about doing something to generate those experiences again.?

What if that desire to “feel better” is our innate intelligence actually trying to head us in a different direction? What if instead of looking?outside?of ourselves for peace and happiness, we turned around and discovered it is?within?us – always and already??

How is our innate intelligence doing that??

The longing we feel for those experiences is experienced where? In our bodies somewhere, right??

I feel mine usually in my heart, chest and upper arm areas. The feeling comes from within, not from without.?

We look for a resolution outside, but the invitation is from the inside.?

It does?seem?logical that if we feel some discontent, then we must go get something outside to put in in order to soothe the discontent.?

But what if it’s the other way around??

Have you ever left home and felt homesick? You wanted to return to what you left.?

Have you ever left a loved one and couldn’t wait to return to them?

We feel something is missing because we left something behind. Could it be that we are leaving ourselves behind when we seek to allay our discomfort with something outside of ourselves?

The seeking actually keeps the longing in place.

If we left home and kept seeking ways to feel better due to that missing piece, we would feel temporary contentment. But what we want is home – not some replacement.?

When we want to relieve our anxiety about an errant supplier and experience peace, we can return to the source of the desire, or longing, for peace.?

How do we do that?

We notice what we are: that we are aware. You are aware that you are reading this, aren’t you? That is, you?know?that you are reading this, don’t you???

Now notice that you were aware that you were aware that you are reading this. Something had to respond, “Yes,” to that last question. THAT is the source of your peace and happiness; it is YOU – pure awareness. If you return to that knowing, to that awareness and pay no attention to your thoughts, you will experience peace and contentment (or happiness) and security – a sense that all-is-well.?

It takes returning to this place over-and-over for it to be consistent, but that is where lasting peace and happiness exist. Already. Always. Right there.?

We’ve just been conditioned to believe otherwise. Our thoughts will also tell us that that can’t be true, i.e., that we already are experiencing peace and happiness.

We are; those experiences are just (so it seems) hidden.?

“Oh, it can’t be that simple,” you say.

Yes, it can, and it is! You – and I – have just been told over and over to find peace and happiness somewhere else. Your thoughts may be telling you that right now.

But return to 1) being aware and then 2) “take one more step back” and “enter the space” of the awareness of being aware. Stay there a few seconds.

Now let’s look at some other reasons that help with the supplier-related issue specifically that you might want to pursue this direct path to the feelings you – and I and everyone – seek and deeply desire.?

(John Maxwell, a well-known executive coach, said that during his 50 years of coaching executives, the number one question they asked is how to be happy.)

I know when I’m anxious about something and put my attention on that feeling and all of the thoughts that go with it, I become more anxious, feel constriction, limitation. And as a result, I will probably only be able to think of alternatives to my situation and take actions that align with those energies.?

We can’t make the supplier get the product here. But we can certainly allow ourselves to experience the feelings we deeply desire and who knows, something you can’t imagine now might become available. We can be anxious and miserable, or we can be happy (or content) and open to the possibilities. This is not positive thinking!

It doesn’t mean you don’t DO anything. It just means you stop the psychological suffering and open yourself to the infinite possibilities the Universe has available!

Emotions are contagious. If you’re anxious, you probably have a team that is as well and their performance then will create results that align with anxiety: unhappiness, lack of creativity and resilience, arguments, discouragement.

You CAN have challenges at work and in your personal life and still experience deep peace and happiness.?

Sometimes it just comes down to sitting with these questions and being open to evaluating where you truly are. Thanks for the great reminder, Peggy!

Finding peace and happiness - great question Peggy O'Neal. I think it a complex web of items. I also think it is elusive. Finding a circle of like minded people certainly helps but is not easy. By the way, I always like any reference to John Maxwell. I have read a lot of his material and had the chance to meet him once. He is true to his word. A great guy.

Peggy... "We look for a resolution outside, but the invitation is from the inside.: Pow.er.ful! You nailed it. A part of my brain keeps driving me outward, looking for the answer at the expense of tuning into my inner wisdom and intuition.
