I recently had the privilege of delivering a guest lecture at the MATS Institute of Management & Entrepreneurship, Bangalore, for their MBA students. The topic, “Strategies for Securing Your Dream Job,” is one I hold close to my heart. Stepping into the seminar hall, I was greeted by nearly a hundred inquisitive students eager to ask tough questions about market dynamics and their future prospects, especially in light of post-COVID challenges.
Despite their concerns, what stood out to me was their determination to persist and secure their dream jobs. This session turned out to be an exciting challenge, with students who had done their research on my expertise pushing me to deliver insights that would resonate.
This newsletter is a reflection of that experience and a call to action for all professionals and students striving for their dream careers. It’s time we ask ourselves some key questions:
- Why do educational institutions, even prestigious ones like IITs and IIMs, often fail to meet students’ career expectations?
- Shouldn’t institutions be held accountable when their graduates struggle to find employment?
- Why isn’t the curriculum evolving to match the modern job market’s demands?

Creating Your Dream Job
Dream jobs aren’t found; they’re created—first in your mind, then in reality. The journey toward your dream job starts with belief. You are the center of your own universe, and your belief in yourself will inspire the world to collaborate with you.
It’s essential to:
- Visualize your dream job and trust that you can achieve it.
- Adopt a survival mindset, much like the Coho Salmon, a fish species from the North Pacific Ocean. Out of 2,500 eggs, only two brave salmon survive against the odds. This relentless determination to survive and thrive should guide your pursuit of a dream job.
What Employers Look For
Remember, no organization is searching for the perfect candidate. They seek potential—people with the desire to grow, learn, and contribute to their success. You don’t need to have all the answers, but you should remain open to training and acquiring new skills. Embrace the learning process as part of your journey.

Overcoming Setbacks
You may encounter failures along the way, but these should be seen as stepping stones. Take inspiration from Ernest Hemingway’s “The Old Man and the Sea.” Santiago, the protagonist, fails to catch a fish for eighty-four days, yet he persists with unwavering willpower. His biggest catch comes when he least expects it, proving that perseverance pays off.
?This indomitable spirit is what will ultimately help you secure your dream job. Believe, persist, and adapt—and your dream job is within reach.
?
Key Takeaways
- Visualize your dream job and believe in your ability to achieve it.
- Stay resilient, like the Coho Salmon, and don’t be discouraged by setbacks.
- Be a potential candidate who’s willing to learn and grow.
- Embrace failure as part of the process and persist like Santiago in The Old Man and the Sea.
