Save and protect children every day. Donate monthly.
Once I was a child and all I could dream about was a secure school, playground, food on the table, health, a shelter and more than anything… my parents and family protection.
Now as a grown man, every single day, on my way to and from work I see children standing in the semaphore begging for alms. Honestly, I feel touched and attempted to share the coins jingling in my car glove compartment. At the same time, there is this loud voice deep down in my soul telling me not to. Then I wonder how can I be so selfish after losing my parent at the age of 16 and having gone through a lot to get this far.
All of a sudden I see another drivers giving alms to that very same child, which makes me feel worst. Again and louder, that voice asks me:
· Are you sure that this child was not sent to beg, by his own parents or custodians?
· What if he is going to use this money to purchase drugs or weapon?
· Have you considered that all this child needs is a home or family?
· If you are that keen to support children, why don’t you use the suitable channels?
During my tenure with World Vision International I have learnt that the best way to support children is through appropriate channel such as foster parents, sponsorship (via child protection institutions and orphanages) and adoption.
