If You Can Build Your Career You Can Build Your Body

Who Would’ a thunk it? Transforming your health and body is similar to building a business.

In fact, I’ve distilled four key lessons I’ve learned while building Bach Performance to helping you look, feel, and perform your best at the bottom of this article.


But first, let’s flashback to 2012: As a young buck trainer, I desperately wanted to build an online business to coincide with my-day-to-day 12-hour grind. 


I loved working with my clients and the elite level athletes at my gym, but I craved a sense of control over my day, my income, and my future.

Around this time I started bachperformance.com.

I had no idea how to run a business. I wrote about my clients' struggles and how I fixed them. Some people read, but many didn’t because frankly, I was a terrible writer.

But I kept showing up.

My business coach at the time told me, “if you want to become something or build a skill, you must take a proactive step towards building the skill each day.”

From that day on, I woke up at 3:30-4:00 am and wrote for 60-90 minutes before trudging off to the gym for my first client at 5:00 or 6:00 am. Many of those days I had 8-12+ clients and didn’t leave the gym until 6,7, or 8:00 pm.

And I’ll be honest: most days I wasn’t motivated.

I felt beaten down and drained. I wanted to roll over and heave my alarm clock out the window before tucking back in next to Lauren. But I stuck with it, kept writing.

Still...nothing happened. 

Until one day when a comment started popping up on my blog. Then another. And another. 

Much to my surprise, my hard work was building in the background, waiting to explode and today was my lucky day.

I had more comments and conversations on social media. People were getting value from my message and as a result, wanted to work with me.

Soon, I worked with major media companies like T-Nation and Bodybuilding.com. Today, Bach Performance is flourishing, and we’ve been featured hundreds of times from T-Nation to AskMen and CNN.

Compared to where I started, it’s often hard to believe. It can feel the same way after transforming with your body. And truthfully, building muscle and losing fat works in a similar fashion.

For this reason, many of my most successful clients are also successful in business. The same mental discipline and actions that may have helped you in your career can help you with your physique...when applied correctly.

Here’s what I mean:

1. Much like I didn’t know how to build a business, I learned through action.

The same applies to transforming your body--you build by taking action and adapting as you go.

2. If something is important to you, do it daily. I wrote daily to build the practice. With enough reps, I developed the skill.

While you don’t need to train every day, you should perform some combination of walking, stretching, lifting, running, or at least paying attention to your diet. Daily action wins out. With enough reps, you’ll get bigger, stronger, and leaner. 

3. If you’re trying to build a new habit, do it first thing in the day. If I skipped writing in the morning, the chaos of my day would take over. Soon, It would be a full week, and I wasn’t taking action.

If you’re struggling to get to the gym, get up first and do it, no exceptions. By acting when willpower is the highest, you’ll take the daily action you need to succeed.

4. When I didn’t know how to build my business, I hired an expert who could help me avoid mistakes and see results faster.
