Are you called to become a Big Brother or Big Sister?
I had driven past the large sign for the Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Metro Atlanta headquarters dozens of times on the way back to my Atlantic Station apartment. Like many of you, I knew that the organization's mission was to create mentorships. Also, like many of you, I had relied on excuses to not get involved.
However, on this one particular warm Spring afternoon, something called me to move past my excuses.
Within a week, I was sitting in the BBBS building participating in an informational meeting. When I looked around the room, I saw a number of diverse faces from across Metro Atlanta who were also called to become mentors.
If they were anything like me, they were a little nervous and had questions:
- How will we be matched with our Littles?
- What if my Little doesn't like me?
- What if my Little's family doesn't get along with me?
And most importantly - Am I good enough to be a mentor?
As I enter my 4th year as a Big Brother, I look back and I realize that my concerns disappeared once I started to spend time with my Little Brother. It has been nothing but an honor to help him grow up.
As we move into a new year, I encourage you to ditch your excuses and really consider if you have a calling to become a Big Brother or Big Sister.
2020 was challenging for America.
Let's make 2021 a time for reaching out to our communities. There is no better way than becoming a mentor for a child in need.
