The "YOU" Brand and how build it!
"You need to work on your brand within the company."
"You need to be more visible."
Ha! Who hasn't heard these words during a performance review before. I certainly used them before and told people that they have to go for it, to get noticed by senior leadership or to get their name out. Especially when working outside the reach of HQ.
But that's yesterday's news! The new challenge is that the coffee machine chat with the VP, SVP, ELT or CxO is a thing of the past. Now - in the world of working remotely - it's even more crucial. To get noticed. To get your name out.
A few weeks ago my mentee asked me how I go about building my personal brand. I gave him a longwinded answer - that it doesn't happen over night, that you constantly need to work on it and, that you need to consistent. But more importantly, that you need to know what you bring to the table - what defines you or what your USP 's are. Once you know that, your next move is to make sure that people know you're accessible.
In all honesty, it was a half-baked, non-scientific answer! Which prompted me to do some research on personal branding and found a few sources (ranging from Harvard Business Review , Indeed , 米高蒲志 , to LinkedIn ) that could be of interest. In a nutshell, I hope they will help you navigate the intricacies of personal branding and unleash its potential.
But before we go there - what is a personal brand?
Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, is famously quoted as saying, “Your brand is what people say about you when you’re not in the room.” A personal brand is the unique combo of skills and experiences that make YOU. It is how you present yourself.?And with that, we're back at what defines you. What your USP's are.
Personal branding has emerged as a game-changer for individuals looking to carve a distinct identity, both professionally and personally. With the constantly evolving job market and increasing competition, building a robust/strong personal brand has never been more crucial. To be clear: This has nothing, and I say absolutely nothing, to do with #instagram, #tiktok etc branding. As matter of fact, in many instances some posts are very career limiting.
So here we go with the findings....
