Are You Being Called to Your Authentic Life Path?

When you get a calling, it doesn’t go away no matter how much you try to ignore the call. It just keeps reminding you that you have something important to do. And it will nudge you over and over again until you respond.?

A calling is like an invitation that is asking you to do something. It comes from within and can be identified as spiritual, esoteric, purposeful and coming from a higher source.

Maybe you heard the call when you were young ,and you didn’t know what to do about it. Or maybe you are just starting to recognize a push from the inside, and you wonder what to do next. Or maybe you have already been following the call yet need a little clarity to interpret the message.

The fact that you are reading this means you have been called, whether you consciously recognize it or not. Now it’s time for you to understand your next steps.

As a child, I was very conscious of a calling. Mine came as a ‘knowingness’ and constant internal communication with the voice that speaks within me. My daily mantra was about what God wanted me to do. Then I realized that every time I talked about it, I got questioning looks of confusion from my family. Whenever I brought it up, they would look at me strange and later began whispering to each other in my presence. I couldn’t get them to buy-in or accept what I believed so I just stopped talking about it. Who wants to talk to people who will not listen to you?

I do believe my parents had someone ‘check me out’. It was a very traditional family member who found that I didn’t follow the ‘traditional’ path he endorsed so my parents were encouraged NOT to honor my rantings but to integrate me into the ‘normal’ society, whatever that was. Well they tried, and it left me neurotic and confused. Rather than having the support of a loving family, I felt very alone most of my life.?

Now, almost seven decades later, I’m still saying the same thing. It hasn’t changed. I’ve experienced enough life to know for a fact that what I have experienced is as true as the things I can see and touch. Like many others, I have a calling. Even though I’ve known it all my life, it wasn’t until I was over 50 that my thoughts and beliefs were validated.?

That’s when I met someone who validated my rantings and could ‘see’ what was going on inside of me. I learned that the voices that were burning in my head and heart were truly a calling from a higher power and I continued my quest to fulfill what I was sent to do. And my validator became my best friend and works with me to make my calling come true.

I made the commitment in my childhood to follow the calling and now, decades later, I marvel at its power.

Are you in a similar situation? It can be very confusing to gain clarity about something as intangible as a ‘calling’. You have to understand how the message is coming to you, what it is saying and how you are to respond to it. In the process, you can make a lot of mistakes interpreting the message. This is where it is valuable to have someone on your team who can help you gain clarity, so you can move confidently on the authentic path to your calling.

Being Called – A Brief History

In history, there are many instances of people being called. Most of us know about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Ghandi and Mother Teresa. These people were all in our lifetime or that of our grandparents. Going back in history, there are many people in the bible who were called – Abraham, Moses, Noah, Mary and so many others.?

We don’t hear as much about the people between biblical times and current times. There are many including:

  • Cyrus the Great – First ruler of the Persian Empire in 600 BC; first to set slaves free
  • Harriett Tubman – American abolitionist and political activist from the early 20th Century, helped black slaves escape to Canada
  • Florence Nightingale – An English social reformer and statistician and founder of modern nursing
  • Oprah Winfrey – Called to bring healing to the planet
  • Volodymyr Zelenskyy – Called to stand for democracy

Each worked diligently to make a difference in the world, based on the challenges of the times and the special gifts they possessed that came from their passion, experiences and/or expertise.?

Unsung Heroes

There are so many more unsung heroes who dedicate their life to make planet earth a better place for others. The neighbor down the street who takes care of everyone’s children. Teachers who spend their own money and take time out of their busy schedule to make sure students understand the lessons and do well on tests. The volunteers at the food bank and the minister at the corner church with only a few parishioners and very little money.?

These people have a calling on their life that they cannot walk away from. It’s who they are. They use their natural gifts and talents in ways that help humanity, help the younger generation, help the community and in turn, help the world become a better place.?

We all face the challenge of hearing, trusting and responding to the call. The image of the calling is clear to many who are too young to have the vocabulary to express it. Then, as we grow into society, we lose the consciousness we had when we were young as our minds are influenced by television, radio, billboards and the preferences of others. We get caught up with friends and family and the need to make a living. Life gets in the way and points us in different directions.

Yet the calling persists. Following it can be difficult. It can also be quite rewarding.

Answering the Call

Do you have a calling? Are you getting a nudge in your head or heart? Are you experiencing synchronicities where certain phrases or people keep repeating in your life? Do people say things when you are thinking the same thing? Is a scripture passage reverberating in your mind? Do you just ‘know’ that a calling is in you?

However you get the message, it confirms that you have a calling and it’s time you pay attention to it. Generally it comes from one of your six senses –?

  • A vision that might just be in your mind’s eye;?
  • A message heard verbally, in your head or in your spirit;?
  • A touch, smell or taste that reminds or awakens you to something deep within,
  • An internal knowing, a sixth sense that you cannot quite put your finger on

The first thing to do is increase your personal intimacy with your inner self. This is the voice that speaks to you all the time and is your connection to your calling. You must be clear on the message that is trying to get through to you. Your inner voice speaks it to you. Are you listening? Can you hear it? Do you see it? Do you feel it?

This is where you start. Listen to yourself. Listen through your whole body.

Your ‘calling’ is waiting for you!
