Are You Being The Best You Can Be?

Are You Being The Best You Can Be?

Having moved into the New Year we should pause to ask ourselves: “Am I being the best I can be?”

Here are seven potentially transformational thoughts for your consideration:

  1. Vision

What is the vision for your life?

If we are lost in a desert, the mere fact of establishing with certainty the direction in which safety lies makes the situation much more manageable. We need to bring a similar level of certainty to our lives.

Have you identified an over-arching purpose for your life?

Identifying your purpose may require you to deal with the potentially frightening question of “Why am I here?”

The wise man Solomon concluded that when all things are taken into consideration, we should fear God and keep His commandments “for it is the duty of all mankind.” Ecclesiastes 12:13

So as you reflect on your purpose and a vision for your life, take care to put God at the centre of your plans.

2. Confidence

Are you going through life with confidence?

Is there a sense of certainty and assurance in your decision-making and in how you present yourself?

Do you consistently demonstrate high levels of self-esteem?

If you are bogged down in self-doubt and a lack of confidence, it may be time to re-examine your spiritual grounding.

To be the best you can be, you should proceed with the assurance that God will work for your good because you love Him (Romans 8:27 – 29).

?3. Wisdom and Discernment

?Confidence is not the same as arrogance. Trusting in God’s Providence is not the same as flying in the face of danger and adversity.

To be the best you can be demands wisdom and discernment. You are required to make wise choices.

To be the best that you can be you should not over-estimate your ability to cope with the challenges that you will face – on the basis of your own strength.

4. Support Mechanisms

What is your favored operating style when you encounter challenges?

Do you prefer to tough it out on your own or do you seek early support and assistance?

Independent thought and courage are key ingredients in being the best that we can be. At the same time, we are not intended to be islands unto ourselves.

The way of fools seems right to them,?but the wise listen to advice. (Proverbs 12:15)

Out in the wilderness animals move in closely-knit packs to provide a solid front against the threat of predators. Predators usually pick off the weak and the lame. There is safety in numbers.

As you strive to be the best you can be, take care to adopt a secure position in the pack. ?Never put yourself out of the reach of well-meaning, supportive, and firmly grounded individuals.

5. Fulfilment

Do you have in place clear strategies for living a fulfilled life?

Do you accept at a deeper than intellectual level that the universe is characterized more by abundance than scarcity?

Do you hold firm to the view that the way to get more is to give more?

How do you feel about the idea that if you desire something in your life, the best way to go about getting it is to see how you can give it to others?

To be the best that you can be you must develop the habit of giving generously. We are told that God loves a cheerful giver. (2 Corinthians 9:7)

Giving and sharing produce immense personal benefits for the donor.

Decide to be a giver.

?6. Image

Are you happy with the image that you are presenting to the world?

This goes beyond mere physical appearance although that is important.

In my experience, people who are well-liked appear to have an advantage. Others are more willing to help them and share opportunities with them.

On the other hand, people who present low-impact or negative images are often overlooked and miss out on opportunities.

Every time we move even one person from wanting to pull for us to ignoring us or actively working against us, we make things harder for ourselves and we find it more difficult to be the best that we can be.

Like it or not we need others and we had better pay attention to how we are going to get them to be on our side. Being the best that we can be means that we live our lives in a way that people will rally around us even as we rally around others.

The capacity to influence others is critical for success.

7. Goal attainment

How effective are you in setting, monitoring, and achieving goals?

Are you able to keep your eyes on your goals?

Are you patient and focused on long-term goals and not just short-term gratification?

How diligent are you? You cannot be the best you can be if you are slothful. We must work hard and work smart to achieve our goals. We must be persistent and consistent in our efforts. To do less is to fail to be the best we can be.

Best wishes for a positive start to 2024!
