You are a Beast: Embracing Burdens for a Better World

In the intricate dance between strength and responsibility, one may find themselves identifying as a formidable force—a beast, if you will—yet grappling with burdens that demand attention. As we conclude a reflective leadership series, let's embark on a personal journey of introspection, questioning the passions that stir us deeply and exploring burdens not as obstacles but as opportunities to sculpt our character and wield our skills for the greater good, ultimately fostering happiness.
Recently, I participated in my first march in Nairobi, Kenya, dedicated to raising awareness about the alarming surge in femicide cases. The display of solidarity from both women and men in support of this cause underscored the profound impact that societal issues can have on our collective humanity. The true measure of a nation lies in how it treats its women, children, and vulnerable populations. My motivation to join the march stemmed from a personal incident not long ago, where an Uber driver inexplicably made two stops at different petrol stations, neither for refueling nor checking tire pressure. Concerned by this unusual behavior, I promptly called my mom and a friend, alerting them and sharing my trip details. I emphasized that if I didn't progress on the map, they should be aware of potential danger. In that moment, I felt a sense of helplessness. Fortunately, the driver, likely alarmed by my precautions, refrained from making any additional stops until I reached home. I acknowledge my fortune, knowing that not everyone has been as lucky, and the possibilities of heinous acts committed against them are distressing. Wevyn Muganda eloquently addresses the necessary journey our country must embark on to combat femicide in her article. It's worth noting that her outspoken advocacy on matters of significance has been a source of inspiration for me.
Inspired by thought leaders such as Wevyn Muganda and Jordan Peterson, I delved into the essence of my own burdens. Four significant areas emerged, each representing a commitment to making a positive impact on society.
1. Financial Inclusion:
Addressing the pressing issue of financial exclusion in Africa, particularly among marginalized communities, became a focal point. I remember getting enrolled to highschool and my mom took out a small facility at her sacco. I’ve always wondered what would have happened had she not gotten access to financing as most parents are weighed down by the huge financial burden that happens during school enrollment. I kept asking myself how many people are there that don’t have access to affordable financing that will help propel their lives forward. Leading the development of innovative financial products in my current capacity, such as Insurance Premium Financing and Third Party Loans, aimed at inclusivity.? I actively seek opportunities that leverage technology in narrowing financial disparities.
2.? Youth Engagement:

Despite Africa boasting the largest youth population, the lack of meaningful engagement in policy development remains a stark reality. Acknowledging the importance of amplifying young voices, I commit to participating in spaces that facilitate inclusive decision-making. And not just plugging myself but providing actionable insights and diverse perspectives that will in the long run add value. Organizations like the Mastercard Foundation serve as beacons, embedding youth representation in every stage of problem-solving.
3. Entrepreneurship and Community Impact:
Entrepreneurship plays a pivotal role in molding communities. Commencing my professional journey in business advisory (consulting), I find immense satisfaction when I step into any Quickmart supermarket and encounter those popcorn stands. The fond memories of being part of a team that contributed to the expansion of the company bring joy to my heart. This expansion not only translated into job opportunities but also contributed to an enhancement in living standards, creating a comprehensive and positive ecosystem.
4. Education:
Education, as emphasized by Malala Yousafzai when she states, "Education is education. We should learn everything and then choose which path to follow," deeply resonates with my beliefs. The realization that numerous young children and adolescents lack access to quality, affordable, and up-to-date education, shaping and broadening their perspectives, is both intriguing and disheartening.
This awareness became vivid during my participation in a work camp, to which I was invited by my friend Christina Randu Garashi and sponsored by Strathmore University . The camp aimed to provide mentorship for a week, inspiring the next generation of high school girls and boys. It struck me that in many places, electricity remains a luxury, posing challenges for school children in acquiring essential resources such as water, sanitary towels, and even books at the grassroots level. While the experience was heartbreaking, it ignited a fervor within me to contribute my skills and resources to support those marginalized communities. Witnessing the ongoing positive impact that my fellow young professionals and I have had on the lives of these individuals is genuinely heartwarming.
Life unfolds in mysterious ways, and our experiences shape the individuals we become. As we bid farewell to the first month of 2024, let us not merely see ourselves as beasts but as champions carrying burdens that address societal problems within our spheres of influence. In doing so, we become architects of positive change, sculpting a world that reflects our commitment to a better tomorrow.
