Are you back in the office this January?
Back to business, then. With the New Year grace period now over, workers are back behind the desk — literally. The return-to-office crowd has been dealt a swing and a roundabout?with remote working down, but hybrid work up, as bosses blame flexible working for the UK’s declining productivity.
Fixing the engagement crisis will be top on the 2025 business bingo card. In our annual survey, 52% of SME leaders identified a motivated workforce as a key factor for success. With many now prioritising growth over cost-cutting, this week, we ask whether employers and employees can kiss and make up in time to revive the UK’s flat-lining economy — a hiring task complicated by the growing controversy around gig economy apps.
That’s long-term. Short-term, another thing January brings (besides the Self-Assessment Tax Return deadline) is the return of our Startups 100 Index. On Monday 13th, we’ll publish our exclusive ranking of the top 100 UK startups for 2025 to celebrate the best of British entrepreneurship, and preview the business trends that will define the next 12 months.
We have always said the Index is a platform to boost early-stage ventures. In truth, the job of the Startups 100 is also to provide a much-needed jolt of optimism for the rest of us wizened business cynics. I hope you read our list on Monday and, like me, are buoyed by the grit and ingenuity of our founders, and assured that the future of UK startups is in rock-solid hands.
