Random thoughts on creative destruction. Never before in history have companies been able to create value so quickly and unpredictably. And never before have companies destroyed value as quickly, even for the companies that were once considered “built-to-last” and despite their best efforts from the board and executives. Today, companies are either inventing the future or they are being consumed by it. For the last 20 years, in my prior role helping Fortune 500 companies to innovate, I saw what works, what fails, and most importantly what is coming next. Most companies despite their best effort in building innovation units are not getting the benefits of their efforts (for many reasons and the list is way too long to include here).
The current rate of change is too exponential and even disrupters are vulnerable to being disrupted. In many of the earlier days, disrupters were not tech titans or unicorns. In those days, the disrupters were the ones sticking it to the man -- and now today, they are the man. The market expects continuous innovation from them and even from the likes of Facebook, Apple, and Uber, who are running out of new ideas. Uber’s new CEO Dara Khosrowshahi needs to prove the company can still innovate. Look at Apple today and we see the test of scale vs. agility. Does greatness have a limit and can it scale indefinitely? Is size the biggest constraint on growth? Can a company grow without a "think-crazy" leader?
I think we have all the answers.

5 年While we have all the answers.... it will take time to unravel a few viewpoints that drive critical industries like education, media and entertainment.... the institutions in these industries have been driving bias for far too long...... Turning off the “hype machine” takes time.... and like Hemingway said “everything happens gradually...... then suddenly.” There are a few outlier disrupters who are changing the rules. Organizing the disrupters such that suddenly a few crazy individuals transform into a global force with a shared viewpoint and solutions to achieve humanities greatest moments...... achieving this organization is a key step in the direction out of this old money making machine we call society. It’s an outdated model. The challenge is - there are a large number of people who are hanging on to the “way things were” because their imagination isn’t at a place where they can see any other option / viewpoint. Let alone consider it.... From my viewpoint the wild and crazy creative disruption that will actually change this world.... it needs to come together.... and become.... a force. Force pun intended - meritocratic thinking is what created most great moments of achievement.
