Are You Asking For Help From the Right Sources? Are You Even Asking?
When I was at Burson-Marsteller a century ago, amongst the performance criteria we were judged on was our ability to network for knowledge, information, new ideas, and value-added expertise. What about you?
The truth is that these days, I am often surprised—sometimes appalled, horrified even…Sable drama…that some of the best resources and expertise I know in companies and in the market, all over the world, often go “hungry and lonely.”?
What I mean is that we don’t seem to be reaching out enough. We don’t ask enough…we don’t engage anywhere near enough with the talent out there and the history and knowledge it represents…and therefore, we are not adding enough value to our own knowledge base which impacts us professionally and personally.?
What makes it worse is that it's there for the taking.
People who have expertise in particular areas of marketing, who are strategic and future-oriented thinkers, who understand new channels and new techniques in ways we might not, and who know how to connect and engage through mutual interest and understanding are all around us.
Having said that, many do reach out—my email, messaging channels, and the sheer number of people who come up to me at conferences or get a mutual acquaintance to arrange an intro keeps me busy with requests of all kinds—and I will tell you I have many amazing relationships with younger folk who really do want to learn and hear another point of view…yet having said that, my advice to speak with others, as in other people with deep experience, often is ignored…and sometimes I feel like a ticked box.

And there it is. None of us can. Ask for help…open up…expand your scope and circle… If it was good enough for Thomas…
I have written that I believe we are seeing a great migration back to basics. The “new” works better and best when it's framed and imbued with expertise, experience, and knowledge.
I can’t stress this issue enough. Too many are waiting too long to ask for input and ignoring the talent pool at their feet. Interestingly enough, the best users are the young start-ups…look at their Advisory Boards and learn. No need to go it alone…

2 年You are so right. I try to understand why, and it’s sad to say but I believe that most of us do not have many questions, we are not even questioning ourselves. That is the first step: the willingness to know more, to go deeper, to connect the dots. We want easy paths, quick solutions; we don’t seek knowledge or wisdom.
