What is Power BI & Who uses Power BI?

The self-service BI (Business Intelligence) platform: Power BI was launched in 2014 by Microsoft. It allows for data visualization and analytics to users and so can be commonly found with likes of professionals that work with data models and disseminating of reports across and within organizations. Recent data shows 36,018 companies use Microsoft Power BI. The most common country and industry to use Power BI are the United States and the Computer Software Industry respectively.  Rigorous Themes reports that “Microsoft power BI is most often used by companies with 50-200 employees and 1M-10M dollars in revenue “and “Looking at Microsoft power BI customers by industry, we find that Computer Software (15%), Information Technology and Services (11%) and Hospital & Health Care (6%) are the largest segments. Of all the customers that are using Microsoft power BI, 26% are small (<50 employees), 46% are medium-sized and 27% are large (>1000 employees).”

 What certifications do you need to work with Power BI? 

Although certificates are not a strict requirement to be able to operate Power BI, acquiring them can increase confidence in your candidacy. If you can show an employer that you're capable of managing all of Power BI's analytics and visualization features, odds are you'll get the job.  

 How do I get a Power BI certification?  

A certificate that you may want to look at is the DA-100: Analyzing Data with Microsoft BI, it can be helpful and costs near $165 The Power BI certification will consist of more than 40 questions, with a passing score of 80%. The test gives nearly equal weight to understanding how to prepare, model, display, and analyze data, as well as implementing and sustaining deliverables.  Other Certifications worth considering include:

Microsoft also provides instructor-led classes, which may be costly, but useful to those that can budget for it. This four-week course is designed for professionals and serves as a beginner’s guide to dealing with data in Power BI. 

 Is it worth getting a Power BI certification?  

According to an estimate by Burning Glass, the number of positions requiring Power BI capabilities will climb 34.6 percent over the next decade. The typical annual compensation for occupations requiring Power BI abilities is approximately $87,000, increasing to more than $120,000 for individuals with the perfect combination of experience and competence. While a certification isn't required to access jobs that use Power BI, it might help you stand out in a congested application pool.
