Origins: In the early days of baseball, when the game was played in open air stadiums, the newspaper always wanted to report how many came to the game. It was hard to get an exact count (and the owners/managers didn’t want to tell them, especially if it was low.) So, they’d simply provide an estimate – give or take a few hundred people.
