WIRED : The City of Tomorrow Powered by Your Toilet Water

"What Epic Cleantec has achieved is to essentially shrink down what a water recycling plant does into a system that fits in a high-rise basement, lightening the burden on municipal wastewater treatment and reducing pressure on water supplies."

The concept of "wastewater" requires a fresh perspective. This article from WIRED ’s Matt Simon highlights the untapped potential to extract valuable resources from wastewater. Epic’s full resource recovery technology can transform building wastewater into three valuable sustainable products:

?? Highly purified water

?? Carbon-rich soil amendments

??? Recovered wastewater heat energy

Ultimately, what we label as "waste" in wastewater actually holds significant value!

Debunking six common water reuse myths

Last week, we asked what you believe are the primary reasons why recycled water is not more prevalent in the United States. Despite its growing popularity, it's still a bit of a wallflower at the sustainability party. Our recent LinkedIn poll uncovered some surprising findings!

At Epic, we're on a mission to flip the script on these statistics. That's why we've put together a roundup of prevalent misconceptions about onsite water reuse in the industry. We're here to reveal the truth behind them, spotlight the perks, boost awareness, and spark real transformation.

?? Demystify the myths

Onsite water reuse reduces the environmental impact of buildings

Did you know that reusing water could be a secret weapon in curbing carbon emissions? Yep, turns out, water recycling isn't just about saving the planet from droughts; it's also a dark horse in our wider climate mitigation efforts.

According to The Climate Group , buildings account for 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions today. By 2050, the built environment could be responsible for 80% of GHG emissions if we don't change course. By weaving sustainability into the very fabric of our buildings and slashing the energy needed to treat and transport wastewater, we're not just constructing cities, we're crafting a blueprint for a more eco-friendly tomorrow.

The difference between direct, indirect, and non-potable water reuse

The recent approval from California’s State Water Resources Control Board to allow local water agencies to convert wastewater directly into potable water is illustrative of the changing tide in public perception toward water reuse.

It’s also raised questions around current water reuse practices and the difference between DPR, IPR and NPR reuse methods.

Refer to water by its quality not its history. It is quite arrogant to take a molecule that has been around for millions of years and label it “waste” after we handle it for a few blinks of the eye. Nature is frowning.

Maybe we should define it by the end product - not the input? Clean water?

Branding matters, I agree. An architect and engineer also stated that Net Zero is Energy + (or Energy Positive). Imagine: "We would like an Energy + building vs Net Zero." A significant difference in perception and purchasing decision.
