You Applied To A Job... Now What???

OK, you saw a job posted and you applied to it. What should you expect. As has been written about time and time again, applying online is a crap shoot at best. Occasionally, though, you will get a call. Here are some of the things that will make sure it doesn’t go past this initial call.
1. The recruiter calls and says he’s with Acme Widgets and you have no idea who that is. You applied to the job!!! You weren’t called by dialing random numbers. At least act like you know and show some interest. Saying things like “well, I applied for a lot of jobs. Who are you again?” will guarantee you a place at the bottom of the stack.
2. You take the call while you are at a pub or some other function where there’s a lot of nose. Recruiters know that when they call you out of the blue, you may be busy. Simply let the person calling that you are not in a place where you can talk and arrange a good time to call back.
3. You seem disinterested in anything the recruiter has to say and won’t provide information when asked. Let’s not get into the argument about salary discussions, that’s been discussed ad nauseam. The purpose of this call is a prescreen and will lead to a phone interview or onsite.
4. You’ve lied on your resume and you can’t remember what you said. Nothing worse than being called out on something on your resume. “I have an MBA from Harvard?????... I mean, yes, I have an MBA from Harvard.”
I’m sure there are many other things that employment people can add to this list, but remember, you’re trying to get a job. Act like you want the job.
(Yes, bad agency recruiters will “embellish your resume, yes, they can be a pain because they don’t take the time to even read your background before they send an email… I agree. Recruiters in my article refer to CORPORATE Recruiters. Those that are internal)
