Are you anxious about your dog's potential behaviour during a professional photoshoot?

One of the reasons I often hear that dog owners are not sure about having a professional photoshoot is that they are worried and anxious that their dog would not behave. Based in Windsor and Ascot, Berkshire, UK, I understand the deep bond between humans and their furry companions as a professional dog photographer. This short article highlights further that very common concern: anxiety about your dog not cooperating during a photoshoot.?

Understanding Your Dog's Behaviour

Before diving into solutions, let's delve into why dogs may seem uncooperative during photoshoots. Dogs, like humans, can experience stress and anxiety in unfamiliar situations. Factors such as new environments, strange sounds, or even the presence of strangers (like a photographer) can trigger these feelings in our beloved pets.?

Additionally, dogs have unique personalities—some may be naturally more energetic or shy, which can affect their behaviour in front of the camera.?

Tips for a Successful Photoshoot

Familiarise your dog with the camera and the photographer beforehand

Having a diploma in canine behaviour training does mean that I can help even the most anxious dogs be comfortable with me and my cameras. A long lens can often look strange particularly when a dog is looking right back at them too! I spend as long as it takes to have the dog at ease and comfortable before photographing the character and personality images.?

Bring along familiar toys or treats to help keep your dog focused and engaged

A favourite toy and certainly their favourite treats can make a huge difference to keeping your dog engaged and focused. I enjoy having the owner be part of play and fun to capture that emotional connection too.

Choose the Right Location

I always encourage a familiar or even favourite location where your dog feels comfortable. I enjoy walking their trail with them, and getting a little ahead to then capture the candid photography between you and your dog as well.?

Patience and Positive Reinforcement

I will always remain calm and patient throughout the session and I encourage all owners to do the same, as this helps your dog to feel at ease. Using positive reinforcement techniques, such as treats and praise, will encourage the desired behaviour.?

Work with a Professional

I know it's obvious that I'll say this, but seeking out a dog photographer who specialises in capturing the unique personalities of dogs will make a huge difference in the photography captured. Being experienced in the understand of dog behaviour and can adapting their approach to suit your dog's needs is critical for images that you'll love. No one wants a photo of their dog looking scared or anxious, and a true professional will make sure that doesn't happen.?

Heart-warming Success Stories

Let me share a heart-warming story from one of my sessions:?

Meet Atlas, an anxious dog since he was attacked by another when he was young, and that completely knocked his confidence. His owner had been clear with me and so I made sure that I was extra careful and considerate for Atlas. He warmed up to the camera as we patiently built trust through gentle encouragement and positive reinforcement. By the end of the session, Atlas was posing like a pro, his playful spirit shining through in every photo. It's moments like these that remind me of the transformative power of patience, love, and understanding.?

As his owner Gen from Woking, Surrey said: "my reactive 4 year old called Atlas is very untrusting of people and dogs he doesn't know due to being attacked. Chris knew all about his history and I think it is real testimony to his skill that within 30 seconds of meeting a normally very vocal Atlas, he adored Chris. This was huge as every positive interaction helps him become more confident so I felt immaterial of the pictures we were already winning. I was blown away when I saw the end results and the pictures."?

In Summary

Remember that every dog is unique, and patience is key when it comes to capturing their charm and personality. With careful preparation, positive reinforcement, and the guidance of a skilled professional, you can overcome anxiety about your dog's behaviour during a photography session and create cherished memories to last a lifetime. I believe that humans cause a lot of the stress dogs experience. They adapt well to this modern world but boy, do dogs have a lot of stress tossed at them.

A beautiful, in-depth article about how you take the feelings of dogs into consideration when taking their photos. Dogs, just like humans, have so many emotional considerations. I love the way you portray them in this article and in your photography.
