Systemic Racism in Corporate Canada: The Illusion of Diversity
Canada is often celebrated as a beacon of multiculturalism. But inside many of its institutions, a different reality unfolds—one where diversity is performative, and systemic racism operates unchecked.
Having worked in two major Canadian banks, I have seen how deeply embedded discrimination is. At Toronto-Dominion Bank, I was subjected to racial profiling, workplace discrimination, and even physical assault. When I spoke out, I was not only ignored but retaliated against.
I followed the “right†channels—I reported the issues, I filed complaints, I took my case to the Canadian Human Rights Commission. Yet, not a single regulatory body took action. The same organizations that promise to protect employees from discrimination failed to enforce their own mandates.
If a country built by immigrants allows systemic racism to persist in its most powerful institutions, what does that say about its true values? Diversity isn’t just about numbers—it’s about action. Until corporate Canada stops treating inclusion as a PR strategy and starts holding itself accountable, the cycle of discrimination will continue.
Real change starts when silence is broken. Who is ready to listen?
