"If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got" (Henry Ford)

It's a bit?cheesy but there is a lot of truth in this quote. We can very easily get trapped into going through the monotony of day-to-day tasks and routines and, unsurprisingly, we get the same results. This applies to both business and personal life.

-??????Don’t make changes in your business to respond to changes in the market? At best you’ll stay where you are, at worst (and much more likely) you’ll see a downturn in performance.

-??????Don’t make changes to your fitness/gym routine as you progress? Your fitness levels will be maintained but unlikely to continue to improve.

And the examples could go on… Change and challenge are essential.

In EOS terms we would say grow or die.

If you are happy and content with being exactly where you are, with no interest in improving, growing, or developing then this approach of continuing to do the same thing will probably be fine with you. I have to say though, I don’t think I often speak to people who are genuinely content and happy with the monotony and don’t want to grow in some way in an aspect of their life or business.

What I think is important when looking to grow and develop is finding ways of challenging ourselves and challenging our mindset. By doing so, we push ourselves to the edge of our comfort zone and change can happen. The challenge can encourage us to break out of the automatic processes that we are in and encourage us to do things that we have never done before. We can identify what is stopping us from being, or doing, or feeling what we need to for us to move forward. Doing something different can help us to identify the barriers, issues, problems, and opportunities that exist.

How do we do something different?

I’d suggest starting off by identifying your preferred way of getting information. Some people love consuming video – documentaries, TED talks etc. Some people love reading books, some people love listing to podcasts (if that is you check out my podcast here). But some people need someone to help guide and support them. That might be in the form of a mentor or coach, or perhaps within a group setting like a mastermind group. If you don’t have a preference, try some different sources, and find what speaks to you more at this time. For example, I am always a member of various mastermind groups as I like the interaction and challenge that they bring,?but sometimes the challenge I will be needing to push me at that time comes from going to a workshop or listening to a podcast discussion on a topic, for example.

Whichever one of those methods is for you, what is important is that you find a way to challenge your thoughts and behaviours so that you can become and be the better version of yourself. Ask people around you to suggest books to read or podcasts to listen to and choose something that is different from the type you would normally choose. Exposing yourself to a different perspective can be really helpful when looking for challenge.

If you are wanting to develop and grow, then you need to invest in yourself. Before you say ‘I can’t afford it’, or ‘I’ve already spent xxx amount on this’, it doesn't always have to require a financial investment - sometimes it is an investment of time and a commitment to implement learnings from training or books that you have already financially invested in but not implemented. There are also tons of free training and resources that exist without any financial commitment. For example, the EOS toolbox? is a complete set of tools that address and strengthen all Six Key Components? of any business. And you can get access to them for free here. If you haven’t read Traction?, the book that has changed the lives of millions of business leaders, their employees, and families throughout the world yet, you can download a free chapter to find out more for yourself here. And if you want to read more then I can even send you a copy of the book for free. Just reach out.

Whatever it is you decide to do to bring challenge – make sure you do something.

What are you doing to invest in yourself? Let me know in the comments. And if this has made you recognise that you haven’t got the challenge you need right now pop me a DM. I’m always happy to share my suggestions for resources and people who might be a good fit to meet your needs.
