Are you allowing your people to sing?

How many times have you watched this classic and timeless movie?
How many times have you watched this classic movie but not observed?
There is one critical moment that the whole movie literally pivots on and relationships are changed irrevocably for the better, forever. It comes during the famous "Lake Scene" when the children return from a day away from the Captain's gaze and strict command and control methodology of parenthood. Away from the walls and grounds of a "house" (not a home!) they have become constrained by, not allowing their true selves to evolve and to openly express themselves and their innate talents.
It is not until Maria reaches a point of desperation where she cannot hold back from providing Captain Von Trapp with the truth, as she sees it, putting her whole career and existence "on the line". From here on those experiences for everyone change for the better. The question however is, should this high risk intervention have been left until now to surface and to have taken place?
The Captain had previously not taken the time or effort to know his children, each one of them requiring different demands, understanding and support.
His lofty position as "head of the family" and an underlying fear of knowing prevented him from building those meaningful, sustainable and loving relationships that deep down they all craved for but no one dared to speak about.

When you allow yourself to take a step back for a brief moment and to breath, do you see this very scenario being played out before your very eyes within your own team, your organisation? Are you in fact yourself playing the part of Captain Von Trapp in those moments when your back is against the wall and you inadvertently revert to a state of command and control? Are you allowing your people to express their talents, thrive and to sing?
And here's the thing! That treatment of the children will have a profound impact on their experiences and on those critical individual relationships amongst themselves when their father is not there. It will undoubtedly affect their mental wellbeing and ultimately how they behave and treat others in the future!
Thankfully, it does not have to be like that anymore. By first gaining access to the right experiential data and providing yourself with the right informative baseline from which to work from you can now allow yourself, your team and your organisation to pivot with less trauma and drama. To then be able to monitor that ebb and flow of individual experiences, gaining a unique insight is ground breaking.
Start knowing your staff and allow them the time and space to sing. You may even enjoy what they are singing and join in!
