Are You Aging and Don’t Know What to Do? You Are Not In This Alone.

When Rachel called my CarePatrol office, the conversation started with a summary of the life she had with her husband and how they weathered life’s storms and celebrated its joys. The tears started flowing quickly as she focused on his passing and how she was now left to navigate the world alone.

For a while, Rachel managed to cope with the grief and the solitude. As time passed, she found herself struggling to maintain the household on her own. Her activities of daily living that were once simple now seemed overwhelming. Her couple friends stopped calling, and her kids had settled into a new routine without dad. Loneliness weighed heavily on her heart.

Rachel recognized that she needed help, and she was struggling with the idea of leaving her home. She expressed grief for her husband, fear of the unknown, and uncertainty about the future. I provided a shoulder to lean on. We began to focus on the care and support she needed and maintaining her independence as long as possible. ?This led her to the decision that it was time for a life change.

I engaged her kids to get the family on the same page, and started the process of reviewing assisted living communities that would meet both her care and socialization needs. As we toured communities, we discussed how to compare the options and developed a plan to get her estate in order, settle the home, budget her available finances and make the transition to assisted living as smooth as possible.

Several of Rachel’s kids lived out of state.? While they could not support mom in person, I asked them to rally around her with love, support and guidance. As we walked through the process, Rachel found the courage to make the transition to a welcoming assisted living community where she quickly met several new friends that helped her adjust to the new environment.? A few weeks after the move in, I visited Rachel for coffee.? She was crying “good tears” as she reflecting on the journey that brought her there. While the loss of her husband had been devastating, she realized that she was not alone. She had a community of people who loved her and were willing to stand by her side, no matter what new challenges life threw her way.

Rachel’s journey serves as a reminder that we are not meant to navigate life’s challenges alone.? In times of need, reaching out for help and allowing others to support us can make all the difference, and even the most difficult transitions become manageable.

Aging and finding appropriate care in today’s healthcare environment can be overwhelming.?There is no one size fits all solution for senior care.?At CarePatrol, our job is to help you navigate these situations and find the solution best suited for your family.??
