Are You Afraid of Your Success?

Are You Afraid of Your Success?

Wow... is this a tricky question, do you think?

I promise you, it's not!

Fear of success is more common than the fear of failure.

Isn't that extremely odd?

Fear of success is typically harder to overcome as well, as it tends to be harder for you to recognize it.

I mean, fear of failure is straightforward: you are scared to make some changes to your career as you are afraid of how the change will materialize - will you enjoy your new team? Will you be good at your new role? Will you be able to add value to a new industry? Do you have what it takes to operate at the next level? Etc.

On the other hand, the fear of failure is complex and it takes effort to get to the bottom of it.

At a high level, it's the fear of how your success (the new job, the promotion, the new business) will impact your life and how others see you.

Which is something that many of us don't even consider at a conscious level.

I know that when I decided to open my career coaching business and leave the banking industry, the fear of failure was real!

I mean, I had been an employee my whole career, so would I even have what it takes to build a business from scratch?

On top of that, I was never a coach in a professional way; I had coached teams within banking, but could I coach someone I knew nothing about up to the moment that we start to work together?

And my list, of somehow obvious fears, could go on and on!

BUT...

What I didn't expect was that the fear that initially stopped me from achieving my goals from Day 1 was the fear of success...

You see, one of my key drivers to open my own business was the fact that I wanted to have more time to raise my young family, so, if I have had the number of clients I wanted from Day 1, with everything else that I had to build business-wise, I could potentially start to feel overwhelmed and have to compromise my family time.

And that is fear of success...

But that wasn't obvious to me at all!

I mean, who doesn't want to be at full capacity in their business as soon as they start, right?!

Everyone is different and fear will show up in different ways for all of us, but if you don't know what you are dealing with, you have no chance of overcoming it.

And the reality is that without overcoming your fears, you will always feel stuck and trapped in your banking career.

????????????

So, here's how you can start to identify what is REALLY holding you back when it comes to your career:

? When you think about the next step that you want to take, how do you see it impacting the relationship with your family?

? Do you believe someone within your circle of friends & colleagues will look at you differently if you are to conquer your next career goal?

? Ultimately, what is one bad thing that can happen, if you are to succeed in reaching the next milestone in your career?

Once you start to have a clear idea of the answers to the questions above, you start to get to the bottom of what's holding you back.

And as with everything, once you've identified you have an issue, is a lot easier to focus on overcoming it!

It's like when you are treating physical pain: you can either treat the symptoms or get to the root cause so that the pain goes away for good.
