Are you addicted to 'average'?
Recently I engaged a new client named Jared.?
He was 45 years old, and came to me wanting coaching to grow his income. He was in the $100,000 range and wanted to double that in the next 18 months.?
He was in a long selling cycle so he knew it would take time.?
But we had a problem; every time I suggested a new course of action — that was outside of his comfort zone — he resisted.?
After meeting this brick wall a dozen times, I had to have that "come to Jesus" conversation with him.
I told him that I felt like he was addicted and attached to the way he was doing things and those methods were not going to get him to a doubling of his income.?
Obviously, he resisted that as well. Go figure. :)
We ended up discontinuing our coaching because there was nothing I could do for him as long as he continued his?addiction to average.?
Remarkably, I see that a lot.?
I used to say that until someone?paid?for advice, they were probably not going to take it. But I’m not sure of that anymore.
He paid - and he still resisted.?
That's why of the $300 billion spent on training, most of it is totally wasted on people who are not really all that into personal improvement.?
If you are someone who has invested in your team and fail to see the fruits of that investment, my bet is that’s exactly what's occurring.?
People get dug into their comfort zone — giving lip service to growth - but the addiction wins.??
So it begs the question,?why are people so attached to their thinking?
The golf coach analogy
If you sign up for golf lessons, and your coach tells you to change your swing it becomes an easy task to undertake.?
There's no emotion to it.?
You roll your right hand over the club more. You keep your head down. You slow your backswing. You move the ball correctly into the stance.??
Those things require no emotion. All mechanical.
But if you hire a coach to help you grow your income significantly, you need not only tactics and mechanics - but a new way of thinking.

That's when the resistance occurs.?
You have become attached to how you think about things and your beliefs around those things.?
And until you are willing to take a hard look at your patterns of thinking and your beliefs, you won't make much progress.?
Sorry to be so blunt.?
You will need to break down your thinking …and re-establish new thoughts that will get you to your stated outcome.
Professional tennis players do this all of the time.?
Roger Federer has re-constructed his game several times as he becomes older. And he’s still in the top ten in the world —?at 40 years old?— with a net worth of a cool $450M.?
Yes, most of that comes from his brand deals, but he doesn't get those brand deals if he's number 77 in the world because he’s neglected his “game.”
My advice is to break your game down by examining your thinking:
When you start to break your sales and achievement game down, you will naturally see some minor defects in thinking.??
Let’s get something straight:?You are not a flawed human being.?
Your thinking might be flawed though. And when you can de-flaw it, the imaginary ceiling will disappear.
Yes, it's hard work. But it's work well worth doing.
