Are you acting like a TURKEY?

Are you acting like a TURKEY?

As Thanksgiving Day approaches, we all have turkey and stuffing on our minds. Eating turkey during the holidays is wonderful. Acting like a TURKEY when setting your fees or negotiating a business deal is not.?

The acronym TURKEY highlights the traps I see my coaching clients fall into. Many of these women are excellent at their professions, but nervous to communicate and charge for their true value.

What does TURKEY stand for? Take a look.?

T- Too eager to please. I refer to these women as Reluctant Negotiators. If you focus too much on the other person’s needs when quoting your fees or negotiating a statement of work, you may close the sale but end up feeling resentful for being under compensated. (Find out your negotiation type by taking this quiz.)?

U - Under price their services. Setting fees without doing research on compensation in your field doesn’t make sense but many women do it. Instead find out the range of fees for the services you provide and then strategically position yourself relative to the competition. Do you want to be the “cheap” option, work too hard and get underpaid? Or the professional who attracts high quality clients that compensate you well??

R- Resistant to self-promotion. To build a business and become the go-to person in your field, you need to let others know what you do. This isn’t bragging. It’s letting future clients know how you can help.?

K- Keep putting off talking about money. Successful professionals know how to frame a fee-conversation and don’t shy away from them. If you are money avoidant, don’t pay attention to your business finances, or secretly wish the client won’t bring up money, you have work to do.?

E- Expect different results. As Einstein said, “Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is the definition of insanity.” Change is uncomfortable but it’s vital if you want to feel good about your services and get paid for the value you provide.??

Y- Yearn for the recognition you deserve. Standing in your power, communicating your value and charging fees that align with your expertise will get you recognized. If you want to do something different in your business in 2024 and stop acting like a TURKEY, coaching can help.

If you want to know more, let’s set up a time to chat. In the meantime, enjoy your holiday meal.

This is brilliant! I have been a turkey. It's not a position I want to be in again. Enjoy your holiday!
