“If you plan to be less than you are capable of being, then I warn you that you’ll be deeply unhappy for the rest of your life.”
Abraham Maslow
Maslow - of Hierarchy of Needs fame - captures a universal truth with the statement above - that? reflects how God has wired us - where we are called to maximize our God given potential - and when we choose to settle - by compromising our values - or - by choosing to do work with little effort - or by choosing shortcuts (accepting mediocrity) - it eats away at our soul.
Plus - when we choose to be less than we are capable of - it initiates a vicious cycle of feeling guilty, less motivated, and anxious - which in turn - leads to us choosing more self-limiting behaviors.
When this cycle becomes a pattern - or worse yet - a habit - it can become very frustrating - as it can leave us feeling overwhelmed and powerless - where operating at our fullest potential feels like a distant dream (a reality we may experience from time to time - but - it’s fleeting and elusive!).
For others of us - maximizing our potential and excellence may be what we expect of ourselves - but - we often push ourselves so relentlessly and without any effort towards self-care - that it ultimately leads to burn out - where we have nothing left to give to the people that matter most to us.
Now - if you can relate to either of these patterns - no need to despair - there’s one industry that you can learn from - that has tapped into 4 fundamental principles of maximizing success and potential.
*Side note - when you tap into a fundamental truth - it transcends categories - so - these principles apply to your business, your life, your marriage, your health, etc.
So - what industry am I talking about??
The airline industry.
The airline industry is the safest and most reliable form of public transportation (minus some recent Boeing products!).
For example, if I book a flight from LAX to JFK, I can expect to arrive there safely, every single time.?
That may sound unremarkable, but that only happens because of how reliable and consistent airlines have become. Consistency doesn’t happen by accident!!
So - without delaying any further - here are the 4 fundamental principles for maximizing success and potential - that the airline industry has taught us:
1. Set Your Clear True North Coordinates
Whenever you get on a flight, you know exactly where you’re headed. You would never hear a pilot get on the intercom and say, “Good morning, folks. We’re flying from LAX to somewhere on the East Coast.” That would be ridiculous!?
Instead, the pilot sets very specific coordinates. These coordinates then define every major decision that is made once the plan is in the air.
Similarly - when we define a clear and specific True North for our business, our marriage, our health, etc., it empowers us to be so much more effective in making decisions, acting with purpose, and attaching incredible meaning to what we do!
Establishing our True North coordinates means incorporating a clear sense of what our core values are, our guiding principles, mission, and vision that infuses our life and work with a nearly uncrushable sense of authenticity and conviction!
Once our True North coordinates are established, every other component of our business, marriage, life, etc., becomes easier and simplified.?
We get to create a “you-sized” dent in the universe with our work - and in our relationships - that God intended and equipped us to create (and the byproduct of this is living a life of extraordinary freedom, purpose, impact, and fulfillment!).
Ask yourself:?
Have you defined True North coordinates for your business, life, marriage, health, etc.?
2. Learn How to Course Correct (or - in other words - be Resilient!)
I heard this crazy statistic that, once a plane is in the air, it can be off-course 90% of the time it’s flying! That sounds crazy, but it’s true!
Despite this reality, the airline industry has figured out a way to consistently and reliably get us to our destinations.?
How? (You might ask!)
Because their pilots know how to course correct.?
Pilots know how to respond to rough air, inclement weather, migrating birds, and whatever else by staying locked in on their True North coordinates! They have a clearly defined destination, so they know what they’re course correcting to.
In other words - the airplane and pilots constantly demonstrate resilience!?
They have an ability to bounce back and course correct from the constant stream of challenges they face on their journey.
Let’s face it: We’re all going to experience setbacks, challenges, frustrations, adversity, stress, and inner conflict on our journey! No path to success is free of difficulties!?
So, what do we do? Do we just throw in the towel and quit when times get tough? Do we let circumstances and other people determine our destination?
Of course not!!!
The path to greatness is about directing our attention to what we can control and accepting what we can’t. We transform every difficulty into an opportunity to learn and grow!?
As we course correct to our True North coordinates, we’ll discover an extraordinary sense of strength, purpose, conviction, and resilience!
(By the way - this is exactly what we help our clients do! We do this by equipping them with proven resilience tools, strategies, and resources - so - when they experience rough air - they know exactly what empowers them to course correct!)
Question 2: Does your organization know how to course correct when things inevitably go off-course?
3. Pivot Efficiently
In air travel, being able to course correct isn’t enough. If they don’t course correct efficiently, the end result can be catastrophic. They must make high-quality decisions efficiently, effectively, and with cognitive flexibility!
There are many stories where pilots, facing a potential crash, developed tunnel vision (where they got fixated on the first solution they thought of - and couldn’t see beyond that).?
Unfortunately - these pilots didn’t know how to work through this new, negative situationa€| and this tends to end in disaster.
In business, staying off course too long can end in financial ruin, burnt out employees, toxic work culture, and crazy turnover costs.?
The same thing applies to your marriage. If you and your spouse venture off course and don’t course correct efficiently, your marriage will end up in a destination you never wanted! It creates resentment and bitterness, emotional disconnect, marriage counseling, and even worse!
*When the original flight path is no longer viable, your role as the leader is to choose a new and better option quickly (demonstrating agility!).
This is possible ONLY after you’ve defined your True North coordinates and understand how to course correct to them!?
When you predetermine your resilience strategies - “If this happens, I’ll pivot by doing this!” - your course correction will organically flow out of you, even in the hardest moments!
Question 3: Is your organization equipped to assess adversity, rise above negative emotions, and make high-quality decisions with agility?
4. Black Box Thinking (Evaluated Experience)
Every airplane is equipped with a recording device that documents flight data and cockpit conversations leading up to - and through - a crash. Why? To evaluate what went wrong!?
John Maxwell famously said, “Experience does not equal wisdom. You need evaluated experience.”?
After a catastrophe, the airline will access that plane’s black box to systematically evaluate the incident, identify what went wrong, and use that insight to get better, stronger, and wiser!
Not only does this info help you improve from past mistakes, but having the ability to evaluate why you are successful empowers you to have a repeatable framework for success!
(Otherwise - you are likely to attribute success to circumstances - and when circumstances change - you are unsure of how to be successful again!)
Here’s my final question: Do you have a “black box?” Does your organization have a system in place to learn from past mistakes and create a repeatable framework for success?

3 个月Great article... and no pun intended when you say "Consistency doesn’t happen by ACCIDENT!!" And there are a lot of great similarities you make with the airline industry and goal setting.
