Yoda Was Wrong

Yoda said "Do or do not: there is no try." I've quoted it a bunch. Because people tend to say "try," when what they really mean is, "I'm not going to do anything." It's in the same bucket often times as "should." I love to say, "Should means won't."

But there are plenty of times when trying is the right move. Attempting. Moving forward. Giving something a shot. Let's talk about that.

Try. Give it a Shot. Go for it.

Lots of people (maybe even you) have an incredible fear of failure issue. That tends to get in the way of this advice. Because the thing is, the more you try, the more data you get. The more you try, the more you can learn what goes wrong. It's video game logic. Keep doing the 'level' until you figure out the right way to win it.

I take 100 shots and hit two, but the thing is, that's usually two more than someone who's worried what will happen if they don't succeed.

We learn so much more when we try something, especially if it's something new. It gives us a new angle, a new set of possibilities, a chance to move beyond what you know into what you might learn soon.

But What if You Fail?

Get this: you fail. If you have to, apologize. If you mess up badly, fix as much as you can of it. Try something different next time. Once you get your head around the fact that nothing HUGE happens when you try and it doesn't work, then you might learn to reset-and-start-again faster.

THAT is when things get awesome: when you try and learn and get that cycle humming so you can win.

Use The Force, Luke

Want one force multiplier? Get help and ideas from someone who knows how to do what you're trying to do. Nothing beats a great coach. Ask your Yoda. They'll give you some pointers. It's great to have someone to guide you.

And then? Forget that Yoda dude and TRY. Try all you want.

What could YOU try? I'd love to know.

Awesome read. Progress > Perfection. #FailForward is better than failing to try.

Smiles…love this…reminds me of when you would hear people in the corporate world say “we tried that and failed”. Thus it was not the trying that failed, it was what was being done that did not succeed. Do you try and try again or do you adjust, strategize, plan a different more compelling execution and go for success. I think so. May the Fourth be with you.

I love this whole attitude. Failure is not only always an option, in many cases it's a useful one. Edison took 10,000 attempts to get a working lightbulb. He described it not as a failure but as a 10,000-step process.

It is always great to read your post or your newsletters sent to me. I have viewed you as my virtual mentor for a few years and shared much of your insights with my int'l leadership groups, my employees, and the executives in my two organizations. Your thought process is refreshing and young. Thank you for always making me dig deeper into many issues and question my way of thinking to make better decisions. Being curious, innovative and ready to take risks by acting on them will push us to grow to be better leaders and help our organization be the trendsetter and not just trend follower.
