YIMBY: Building a Brighter Future, One Home at a Time

As a ‘veteran’ #urbanplanner, I've witnessed the UK's #housingcrisis unfold first-hand. From soaring prices to chronic under supply, the consequences are undeniable: young adults trapped in rented limbo (assuming they can find a rented home), families squeezed into inadequate spaces, and the dream of home ownership fading for many. While the causes are complex, one glaring factor stands out: a vocal minority opposing developments near them, often drowning out the silent majority who recognize the need for more housing.

I applaud the efforts of planning superstars like Chris Young KC running with a house wrapped around him for Shelter , however I believe there is a societal change of attitude needed if we are to beat this problem for our future generations.

?

This is where the YIMBY (Yes In My Back Yard) movement steps in, offering a much-needed breath of fresh air. Unlike its counterpart, NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard), YIMBY advocates actively support new housing developments, recognizing their crucial role in building vibrant, inclusive communities.

?

But how can you, as an urban professional, engaged citizen, or simply someone who craves a better housing future, get involved? Let's explore the avenues Just Build Homes offers:

The Power of YIMBY: Real-World Examples:

?

The YIMBY movement isn't just theoretical; it's already delivering tangible results:

?

Minneapolis, USA: In 2018, YIMBYs successfully campaigned for zoning reform, allowing for denser development and more affordable housing options.

Amsterdam, Netherlands: The YIMBY Amsterdam chapter actively advocates for inclusive housing projects, challenging restrictive zoning regulations.

London, UK: The London YIMBYs network mobilizes support for developments facing local opposition, ensuring diverse voices are heard.

These are just a few examples. Countless communities worldwide are embracing YIMBY principles, demonstrating the movement's potential to create positive change.

?

Addressing the Under-supply Crisis:

?

For nearly four decades, the UK has grappled with under-provision of housing. The consequences are stark: inflated prices, social inequalities, and a generation locked out of home ownership. While the YIMBY movement alone cannot solve this complex issue, it plays a vital role in shifting the narrative and empowering communities to advocate for sensible solutions.

?

Remember:

?

The silent majority supports responsible development. By speaking up, you amplify their voices and counter the disproportionate influence of NIMBYism.

Well-planned development benefits everyone. New housing creates jobs, boosts local economies, and fosters vibrant communities.

Change is possible. The YIMBY movement is gaining momentum, demonstrating the power of collective action in shaping a brighter housing future.

Join the YIMBY movement today.

Let's build a future where everyone has access to safe, affordable, and quality housing. Together, we can make a difference.
