There isn't a bad time to get to know your customers better, so it's fair to say the best time to start doing that is... well... now.

Understanding your target customers' behavior and decision-making process would probably be one of the most critical things you need to succeed in 2023.

How to get started? Here are a few tips and?resources?that might help.

Why should you have a defined target audience?

When I ask business owners "who is your target audience?" and hear them?answer "well practically everyone can be our customers" I get frustrated.

I mean, let's face it. Not everyone's going to love what you have to offer, so you better invest in the audience that makes the best fit for your brand.

When you market to "everyone" you can't be unique. When you market to your specific persona, you can show your brand persona and be different.


Diving deep into your customer persona:

Why? because when we talk to a specific person, we tend to be more authentic and conversational. This will help you avoid talking in a very "mass marketing" language when you communicate your brand.

Drawing a customer persona character sketch typically includes:

  • Demographic information (e.g. age, gender, location, income level...)
  • Behavioral patterns (e.g. online vs. offline shopping habits, how they make their purchase decisions, etc.)
  • Psychographics (e.g. interests, values, lifestyle)
  • Their goals and challenges
  • How this persona interacts with your brand or brands in the same space


Where should you start?

To take the first move into getting to know your customers better, here's a list of questions you should ask:

  1. Who are they?
  2. Where do they look to find information online?
  3. What are their biggest challenges or desires?
  4. What solutions do you offer?
  5. Whom do they trust?
