Yes: You Can Speak Many Languages

As the newest member of HYPIA (link: The International Association of Hyperpolyglots), it’s important to share: Anyone can learn new languages. And whether you speak multiple languages already or only your native tongue; reading this in a Braille tool or any alternative learning app: All of us neurologically are wired to learn languages.

No baby is born speaking language. S/he has the innate passion and curiosity that drives all sensory learning. Many students try a second/additional language for the first time in school and are turned off because short-term difficulties equate to a lower grade. Ironically, school learning of languages many times turns off 80 percent of students from being bilingual: No fault on our teachers – it is the grading system in direct conflict with different language learning styles.

Here is a very achievable approach:

·       Pick any language today that you personally are excited about.

·       Google/YouTube/ask a friend who speaks that language for 10 words that represent concepts/items/topics that you personally are excited about.

·       Use each of those words at least 10 times in public (in front of someone else) during the day.

·       Before you sleep, repeat each word 10 more times again, visualizing the meaning of each word.

·       Repeat all the steps again the next day: 10 new words and use the 10 you learned before.

After one month, you’ll have a solid foundation to both appreciate and use your new language conversationally.

Don’t worry about “failing” nor any negative feedback. The very fact you are taking the initiative shows your own commitment for diversity, cultures and other points of view, which if nothing else, puts you in the group of “making a difference”. If certain folks can’t appreciate that – share your language passions with someone who does. Learning, languages and personal growth are meant for all – not for the few.
