Yes, I’m on a Greyhound bus . . .

you see I’m on an adventure, some of it planned some of it very very very random. Like taking a Greyhound bus home to Indianapolis from Nashville Tennessee when all I was trying to do was get home from a Fort Lauderdale girls trip.
Life is an adventure full of stories, some epic, some tragic, some beautiful, some so damn funny you sit and cackle to yourself like I have done a thousand times in the last 24 hours.
Okay, okay, I have to share one. While waiting to board my bus in the very colorful Greyhound bus station in Nashville, Tennessee, a nice man sitting beside me asked about the tattoo on my arm. I love my tattoo. I happily rolled up my sleeve to show him, flourish, joy, faith, all words that mean everything to me.
We immediately connected as he shared that all his tattoos are about God and faith too. He’s even planning a huge back piece of Jesus on the cross, he knows exactly what he wants but knows he needs to find the exact right artist to draw it.
He learned the importance of a great tattoo artist from a very unfortunate event. There's lots of life lessons in this story, so lean in.
After a night of partying, he and a buddy got out the tattoo gun. I told you, there’s a life lesson all on its own. He told his buddy he wanted JESUS across his left forearm. Well, unfortunately much like the “no regrats” meme fame, what he got was JESUE. I know this is a very true story because in an act of you show me yours and I’ll show you mine, he showed me the now infamous JESUE on his left forearm.
He showed me without shame. You see, this is just a part of his story. He and I sharing the story is the kind of human connection we all need in our lives.
He said he would have killed the guy but according to his ex old lady, who was there that night, the tattoo artist buddy had shown him what he had drawn out and he approved it. Ernest Hemingway once wrote, “Write drunk, edit sober.” My bus station buddy would agree.
More disappointing news, the best tattoo artist he knows is in prison for life. As much as he’d love him to do that great Jesus back piece and fix the almost Jesus on his arm, he’s not willing to go back in to get them. I applauded his choice, not literally because no one really claps in the bus station, but with my love and respect of him as a human and his story.
Life doesn’t always give us what we want, we all have that in common. When we share our stories courageously and without shame, we connect in a really beautiful way.
Why am I sharing this with you? Well, it’s probably the best story you’ll hear all day. And it’s a true story. In my opinion, those are the best kind of stories, courageous true human stories.
And if you’re still reading, you must think so too. So I want to invite you to an event on April 20th where 7 of the most courageous women I know will be sharing their stories. I’ve been working with them for 7 months to uncover their unique story that needs to be told. They’ll do a 7 minute “TED-like” talk of their story.
You can be there with live music, food, drinks and authentic conversation with your tablemates. We won’t have tattoo guns, you know, because of the drinks. But I promise you’ll leave with an epic story, a memory, something etched on your heart.
