Yes, But How? Practical Steps to Infuse Gratitude into Your Leadership

Imagine opening an email today with the dull subject line of "Immediate Action Required." You reluctantly open the email and are shocked to read:

Effective immediately we are now Grateful Leaders and lead a grateful team and are officially a grateful company.

Can a leader issue a mandate and suddenly all leaders become grateful leaders?

While I haven't witnessed the mandate approach with gratitude, I've seen it with other practices.

Gratitude doesn't work like that.

Gratitude isn't a switch you flip; it's a practice you cultivate.?

"If you want to invite more gratitude into your life, it starts with slowing down...pausing to notice the good and beautiful in and around you." Kevin D. Monroe

Over the past few weeks, we've explored the transformative power of gratitude in leadership and organizational culture. Many of you are excited about the potential but asking the crucial question:

Yes, but how do we actually do this?

Here's how to begin infusing gratitude into your leadership without resorting to ineffective mandates:

  1. Start with Yourself: To infuse gratitude into your leadership, you must first infuse it into your life. How you lead is an overflow of who you are. Begin by setting an intention and cultivating the desire to lead with gratitude. Make it a daily practice, as natural as brushing your teeth or checking your emails.
  2. Identify and Infuse: Look at your primary daily tasks. Most leaders can identify three primary buckets where you invest your time, energy, and attention daily. For each one, ask yourself: "How can I infuse gratitude into this task today?" It could be as simple as thanking a team member for their punctuality in attending a meeting or expressing appreciation for a well-prepared report.
  3. The Cascading Approach: If you're in a leadership position, start with yourself and then, invite your immediate leadership team to join you. Model gratitude consistently, then invite your direct reports to adopt the practice in their leadership. As this cascades through the organization, people will start noticing something different about the leaders. Gratitude is often more easily caught than taught.
  4. Make it Visible: Create visible reminders and opportunities for gratitude. This could be a gratitude wall in the office, a moment of appreciation at the start of meetings, or a weekly gratitude email highlighting team achievements.
  5. Measure and Adjust Regularly assess the impact of your gratitude practices. Are people more engaged? Is communication improving? Use surveys and feedback sessions to gauge the effect and adjust your approach as needed. Explore tools like The Grateful Leader 360? or The Gratitude Gauge? .
  6. Get Professional Help If you're serious about infusing gratitude into your leadership, consider getting expert help. Professional coaching can provide personalized strategies and accountability. I've got openings now for Grateful Leader Coaching, DM me if you're interested.
  7. Deploy a Structured Approach Consider adopting a structured program like our 21-Day Gratitude Infusion Journey for leaders and teams. This guided experience helps you systematically adopt and implement gratitude as a leadership skill.

Remember, transforming your leadership style and organizational culture through gratitude is a journey, not a destination.

It requires consistent effort, patience, and a willingness to be vulnerable and authentic. It's not about mandates; it's about modeling and cultivating a genuine practice of appreciation.

What would this world be like if everyone recognized and used gratitude to start each day? We are constantly reminded just how lucky we are.I know I try each and every day to infuse gratitude into my morning mediatation. Now I started forming a new habit of introducing it again through the day as well as bed time .Thanks Kevin D. Monroe for creating this necessary movement!

Agree completely Kevin D. Monroe Gratitude is not a task, is not an obligation, is not top down. It’s not like with kids where you educate them on politeness by telling them when they have to say thank you. It must become a desire from each separate person to express more often appreciation towards others, no matter if it’s in private or in the company. In the very first place I’m more grateful because I have the desire to make others more happy about the positive contributions to my work environment or in my life. Leadership can have a desire to have a more grateful culture. They can drive activities and show the example to all the other people. They can try to make people reflect about it. Then they can hope it gets picked up by many. But never ever it can be an obligation. If so, I would run away from that company. And as to my own situation, it doesn’t have to be the leadership pushing for this culture change, I do it bottom up. And yes, it’s being picked up by many. Let’s see if I get 13000 people to become more grateful. ???? #MissionGratitude
