Yes, There Are Calories in Wine :-(
I know this is a subject no one wants to hear or read about.
Especially us wine professionals, don't fancy talking or emphasizing on that aspect of wine knowledge that affects our favorite beverage... Fair Enough!
Yet, as professionals we like to claim we are, and also sometimes as wine drinkers ourselves, we certainly ought to know what's in that bottle we're selling to customers, or sipping with family and friends.
Here is the sad news: there are quite a lot of calories in wine :-(
But how many exactly?
Here are the few facts you should definitely know and remember:
1 - Pure ethanol (the main alcohol in wine) contains 7 calories per gram, which is in between the calory 'concentration' of sugars (or carbs, at 4 calories/g) and fat (at 9 calories/g).
2 - The rule of thumb goes that:
1 standard-size glass of wine contains on average about 150 calories.
In fact, this depends on the percentage of alcohol (or abv. %age) each individual wine contains like the graphic below shows.
3 - So, how does that compare with other food products?
If calorie counts in absolute aren't particularly telling to you, check out how a glass of various wine styles compares with some popular and delicious (and rich) foods:
