The Challenge
The unused space required major refurbishment to enable the ophthalmology team to move in.
The unused space required major refurbishment to enable the ophthalmology team to move in. The area had no heating or floor/wall finishes with much of the roof structure exposed and minimal insulation. In addition, there were three open service holes in the floor and the roof, where old ventilation pipework had previously been removed.
The design of the new ophthalmology clinical rooms had to be carefully considered and would have to maintain fire egress, whilst providing a safe, comfortable and functional clinical space.
Our Solution
Quattro, with a wealth of experience in similar projects, took on the challenge and transformed this unused space into a bright, vibrant and captivating area, which enhances the ophthalmology clinic and expands the team’s capacity by 50%.
Our proposal included developing the existing entrance to provide a reception and waiting area, four clinical booths equipped for a variety of uses, along with two consulting and two clinical treatment rooms.
The half-height walls, that we specified for the project, provide a high level of privacy within the individual booths, whilst enabling natural light to be shared throughout the clinical spaces (where required), creating a brighter environment for patients and staff alike. The half-height walls are also ideal for staff supervision, providing a richer training environment. The innovative design of these half-height walls received a hugely positive reaction from the clinical staff in Phase 1 of the project.
As the space is open plan, there is a seamless transition between the various uses of the spaces. We employed a two-tone flooring design to distinguish between waiting, transitional and treatment zones, further assisting patient flow and ease of navigation. Our use of bold colours throughout the scheme contributes greatly to the success of our design, offering a contrast from the softer, off-white wall colour, creating a light canvas.
The functionality of the design works efficiently with a simple layout, which is easy to navigate. Due to the needs of the facility’s patients, a simple and user-friendly layout was of paramount importance. The ease of navigation also helps with patient flow and smooth operations, helping reduce wait times for patients.
The simple layout, coupled with the innovative use of colours against a soft backdrop creates a focal point to highlight key areas for patients, such as waypoints, entrances to booths and walkways.
Our team of healthcare architects has enjoyed working on both phases of Yeovil Ophthalmology, creating a new clinical space, away from primary hospital sites. Not only does our innovative layout help reduce patient wait times at the clinic, but also frees up additional space at primary hospital sites, increasing capacity across the Trust.
