A Year of Transformation: Teamwork in the 2024 Tennessee Football Season
Football is more than a sport; it’s a powerful force for unity and collaboration. The 2024 Tennessee Volunteers football season offered countless reminders of how teamwork inspires and brings people together. In this sixth edition of A Year of Transformation, I reflect on my experiences as a proud Black alumnus and explore how we can support Tennessee sports through advocacy for equity, ownership, and intellectual rights, particularly in the realm of NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) rights.
Memories from the 2024 Tennessee Football Season
This past season was filled with unforgettable moments that strengthened my connection to Tennessee Football and the Volunteer spirit.
In September 2024, I hosted a tailgate for the Chick-fil-A Classic in Charlotte, where Tennessee faced off against NC State. The energy of Neyland Stadium might not have been there, but the passion of Volunteer fans turned the parking lot into a sea of orange and white. This tailgate was more than a gathering; it was a celebration of unity and tradition.
Later that month, I joined fellow alumni at the UT Black Alumni Atlanta watch party for the Tennessee vs. Oklahoma game. Surrounded by Vols from all walks of life, it was a reminder of the far-reaching impact of Tennessee sports in fostering community and connection.
In November, I attended the Mississippi State vs. Tennessee game during homecoming in Knoxville. Walking into Neyland Stadium for homecoming was a nostalgic experience, taking me back to my first UT homecoming in 1998—the year we won the national championship. Seeing Neyland lit up with pride and passion reaffirmed how football brings us together.
Finally, in December, I watched Tennessee face off against Ohio State in the first round of the inaugural 12-team college football playoffs. Witnessing history in the making was electrifying, as the Vols continued to showcase teamwork and resilience on one of the sport’s biggest stages.
The Legacy of Tennessee Football
The legacy of Tennessee Football is intertwined with teamwork and leadership, exemplified by icons like Conredge Holloway, the first Black quarterback in the SEC. Holloway broke barriers and paved the way for countless athletes, embodying the Volunteer spirit of resilience and unity.

Another symbol of leadership and inspiration is Alex Haley, whose work as an author and activist is a reminder of how Black alumni continue to shape the cultural fabric of the university. Haley’s legacy inspires us to think critically about representation and equity in all aspects of campus life, including athletics.
Looking Ahead: Advocacy for Tennessee Sports
As a proud alumnus, I see opportunities to continue supporting Tennessee sports in ways that advocate for equity, ownership, and intellectual rights. Here’s how we can make an impact:
Conclusion: Unity in Orange and White
The 2024 Tennessee Football season was a powerful reminder of the teamwork and unity that define the Volunteer spirit. Whether on the field or in the stands, the ability to come together and work toward a shared goal is what makes Tennessee sports so special.
As we look ahead, there are countless ways to build on this legacy—through advocacy, representation, and collaboration. By supporting initiatives that promote equity and ownership in athletics, we can ensure that Tennessee sports continue to inspire and unite future generations.
Join me next week as I explore another chapter in A Year of Transformation. Together, let’s reflect on the lessons sports and community offer as we navigate our own journeys.
