Italy has about 60 Marsican bears??, 3300 wolves ??, and eagles ?? number no more than 500. There are about 3900 tigers worldwide: there were more than 100,000 in the late 1800s.? Savannah elephants number about 350 thousand, and their numbers are declining rapidly due to poaching.
It is important to read and interpret the data: they tell us where we are going! ?? The inhabitants of planet earth are almost 8 billion. What does it mean to live on a planet with 3900 tigers ??? isn't that impressive? We talk about Sustainability but how do we apply it to the natural world?
In many Asian cultures, February 1, 2022, marked the beginning of the Year of the Tiger: auspicious, as tiger numbers have begun to rise again after decades!
What does Sustainability profoundly mean? How do we avoid applying an anthropocentric view to the world around us? There are many associations that defend indigenous people and their land, arguing that the hunting they do is truly sustainable-they do not kill animals more than necessary. All the people of the world with a deep connection to the land use it without depleting it to the fullest extent.
Perhaps Sustainability means not only transforming the way we produce but also radically changing the relationship of human beings to the environment around them: no longer one of domination but as part of a much larger universe.
