Year In Review

As 2023 draws to a close, our team is taking a moment to reflect on a year that felt like a whirlwind of opportunities and challenges. Throughout the months, we've been engaged in a variety of projects that have defined our journey. From exciting opportunities that propelled us forward to navigating through a few hurdles, we've experienced a dynamic and eventful year. Here's a glimpse into the highlights from our team in 2023.

Our 75th Anniversary

2023 marked the 75th anniversary of Pure Line Seeds. This milestone makes us grateful for all the people who have supported us over the years. Our team is continuing to expand this legacy because we stand?on the shoulders of industry giants that were a part of Pure Line. We look forward to the next 75 years and what lies ahead for Pure Line Seeds. Soon we will be posting a video about our 75th anniversary, so be on the lookout for that before the end of January!

Purchase of Colorado Facility

Pure Line Seeds purchased a seed production facility in Olathe, Colorado. This was an amazing expansion opportunity in Pure Line Seeds’ Productions. This facility comes with cleaning equipment, drying, storage, and offices. We are still doing the?bulk of our productions out of our Washington Facility, but this new addition allows Pure Line to expand our production capabilities in many ways. We pride ourselves on our custom production offerings and with this expansion, we will be able to accommodate not only our own seed needs but the needs of others. ?

School Field Trip

In April, Moses Lake Christian Academy's?1st Grade class had the chance to visit the Research Farm?in Washington. They spent some time on the farm?learning?all about Pure Line and how we breed and produce seed. Ellie, our Research Director, had the opportunity to explain how seed genetics work and show them around the greenhouse! We enjoyed having so many good questions from the kids and their interest in learning where?veggies come from!??

Here are photos of our team with the kids showing them through the farm

Summer Trials & Field Days

We had a great trial season across the board. From our assortment of peas and beans to carrots and our fresh market varieties, we had positive outcomes in various regions across the country and around the globe. We experienced a bit of a drought in the Midwest, but many of our pea varieties proved to be resilient to the drought. We also had great turnouts for our field days in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Canada, Washington, and New York.

Organic Field Day Demo

In July, our?team?had the unique opportunity to host a demo day in a PLS organic bean field.?The piece of equipment used in the demo was designed to zap weeds in-furrow with lasers. This is an alternative method of weed prevention in organically grown fields. By the end of the field, they had calculated an 83% accuracy on the AI. And another cool fact is that this was the first time this company has ever shot weeds in beans of any type.

40 Under 40 Award

Congratulations Ethan!! Ethan was recognized as one of the?award recipients for the Fruit + Vegetable 40 Under 40 Award.?This honor is reserved exclusively for outstanding young industry professionals who are demonstrating exceptional commitment to making their mark in the industry through involvement, innovation, and leadership. We want to congratulate Ethan on this amazing?accomplishment and well-deserved award recognition! Ethan was honored during a live event at the Great Lakes EXPO in Grand Rapids on Tuesday, December 5th.?

Edamame Breeding

We're excited to announce that Pure Line is breeding in a new crop, edamame. We are currently in the 4th generation and we are looking forward to the new offerings we'll have in the coming years. Watch the video below to listen in as Ellie explains?our goals with the edamame program.

Ethan's Trip to Europe

This year Ethan took a trip to the UK, Netherlands, & Germany to meet with our partners and see how some of our varieties are performing in Europe. Overall, it was a great way to see what the future looks like for our varieties in Europe!

Seed Production Harvest

Pure Line had a strong production in the PNW for the 2023 growing season. Yields for pea seed were solid and the quality of the seed was good. This was a very welcome sight after Mother Nature has thrown us a curveball for the past two growing seasons. For the garden bean season, Pure Line, again, had a successful growing season with favorable weather to allow for an easy harvest season. Below is a video of our growers harvesting the seed.

Research Project: Mildew/Mold Cage

Ellie and the Research crew collaborated and built a mildew/mold chamber to extend disease screenings. A poster about the chamber was presented at the BIC conference. This research innovation was placed among the top ten worldwide. Congrats to the team on this accomplishment!
