Year in review on China bauxite price change in 2017
Jan. 4, 2018 - In 2017, the main themes of China bauxite market are price-up and supply shortage, mainly forced by serious environmental protection policies and effective government actions. Around February and March, the first round of price growth happened in Yangquan and Xiaoyi, increased by about CNY 20-50 /t, which is more likely a common price adjustment.
A strong round of consecutive growth waves came in the Mid-2017, when central environmental protection inspection team coverd the main production area of bauxite, forcing prices of various grade of bauxite commonly to a consecutive increasing. Since then prices have keeping upward trends in the second half year.
At Q4, 2017, implementation of winter peak hour production policy and shortage of natural gas push bauxite prices into a higher level in this winter. Prices of all degrees of caustic calcined bauxite stood up onto the top when 2017 ends.
The following text will briefly outline the current situation includng market and production in four main bauxite sourcing area.
In Yangquan:
December, offers of several degrees of bauxite for both shaft furnace and titling furnace rise up by about 50CNY/t, mainly forced by natural gas shortage and price growth.
Currently, environmental protection measures are heavily implemented by local government and there are still some local natural gas powered kilns in halting mainly due to previously declaration of pollutants emissions fails to meet standards. In this situation, they have to apply for increased emissions Indicators, but it also means more environmental costs.
Recent tight supply of natural gas has affected the bauxite production in local producers. The measures of air pollution control, including natural gas shortage which is also caused by environment protection, are the main reasons bringing more risks for current market.
