As the year gradually fades, here are 10 thought-provoking questions to reflect and inspire the dawn of the new year

Whether you have a virtual work team holiday social left this year, or to kick off 2021... or if you're on Zoom with friends or family, here are a series of thought-provoking questions that I came up with and used with my Fanshawe College teammates during our holiday Zoom time today. The responses were fun and deep and full of honesty and hope. It's amazing to see how a team of individuals share similarities in thoughts and concerns and hopes.

We used an anonymous real-time word-cloud tool to input our answers to these questions and see what the team's collective mental state was. It was illuminating. This is the tool: https://www.polleverywhere.com/activities [there's a free option, which is what I used]

These are my questions:

  1. What has sucked the most about 2020?
  2. What is the one word you'd use to describe (your team/organization) right now?
  3. What is one thing you learned/grew/realized/discovered/never knew before in 2020?
  4. How are you feeling NOW? Right this very second?
  5. What is the one word you'd use to describe 2020?
  6. What has been the best part of 2020?
  7. What is keeping you going/giving you hope right now/for the future?
  8. What is your favourite thing about (your team/organization)?
  9. What is your one roadblock as you enter 2021?
  10. If you had one wish for (your team/organization) for 2021, what would it be?

I think self reflection makes sense and is healthy. However, I think adding a few questions that are focused on others is important too, e.g., what do others need from me or what can I do for others in the new year? All the best for 2021, Andrew!

Great questions for reflection as we reach the end of 2020. Here’s another one I’ve been reflecting on - what innovations and practices that we developed during the pandemic will we continue when things get back to “normal”?
