The Year of Elections Has Been Good for Democracy
But the Biggest Test Will Come in America
In this November’s U.S. presidential election, voters will be choosing between two different visions of America—and two vastly different visions of what role the country should play in global affairs. The next president, no matter who it is, will have to contend with major foreign policy challenges, including Russia’s war in Ukraine, the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza, the global migrant and refugee crisis, a warming planet, and competition with China—all issues that could shape voters’ choices at the ballot box.
In a new essay, Francis Fukuyama discusses the lessons from this year’s elections around the world—and weighs in on whether democracy will prevail over illiberal populism in the United States, as well. “Thus far, the so-called year of elections has not been a terrible one for democracy worldwide,” Fukuyama writes. “Populist and authoritarian parties and leaders have made gains in some countries, but they have lost in others.”

6 个月I beg to differ with the premise of this article. This year has been good for Democracy? China is emboldened to threaten Taiwan, multiple wars, US leaving key locations in Africa, Turkey threatening to use NATO against Israel…. And this is just the tip of the iceberg, without discussing how the entire nomination and vetting process of a candidate was tossed out the window. This is the opposite of democracy. ….if this is the authors idea of good, then I don’t want to see his idea of bad.
